Screen flickering is often caused by a display setting, app, driver, cable, connection, or hardware fault; by itself, it does not indicate an eye or neurological condition. Take a break if it is uncomfortable, troubleshoot the display, and seek medical advice for persistent or concerning symptoms. Flashing lights can trigger seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy, but an ordinary flickering display does not mean you have epilepsy.

What screen flickering can—and cannot—tell you

A flicker is an observable display problem, not a diagnosis. It can come from software or settings, a loose or damaged cable, a connection issue, or the monitor itself. HP’s troubleshooting guidance covers display settings, apps and drivers, connections, cables, and display hardware: HP Monitors – Display quality issues.

Separately, prolonged screen use can cause temporary eyestrain. The Saudi Ministry of Health lists symptoms including headache, dryness, light sensitivity, and blurred or double vision, and notes that many screen-related eye symptoms ease after use stops: MOH: Eyestrain. Those symptoms are not proof that the display is damaged, and a flickering display alone does not establish an eye condition.

Can screen flickering trigger a seizure?

Flashing lights and visual patterns can trigger seizures in some people with photosensitive epilepsy. The Epilepsy Foundation reports that about 3% of people with epilepsy have seizures triggered by flashing lights or visual patterns. Its guidance describes 5–30 flashes per second as generally most likely to trigger seizures, while emphasizing that susceptibility varies and depends on more than frequency. These figures are general guidance, not a threshold for diagnosing a person or determining whether a particular screen is safe: Epilepsy Foundation: Photosensitivity and Seizures.

If flashing lights concern you, the Foundation recommends talking with a doctor. ISO 9241-391:2016 sets requirements and recommendations for reducing photosensitive seizures while viewing images on electronic displays; ISO says the standard was reviewed and confirmed in 2021 and remains current. Its focus is image content, not diagnosing a viewer or repairing a particular monitor: ISO 9241-391:2016.

What to check first when your computer screen flickers

Change one thing at a time and note whether the flicker changes. That makes it easier to tell whether the cause is limited to an app, the computer’s display settings, the connection, or the monitor.

  1. Check whether it is one app or the whole system. Note when flickering starts and whether it continues outside the affected application. HP advises checking for an app or display-driver issue; if Task Manager also flickers, an app or driver might be involved. Address the implicated app or update the display driver.
  2. Confirm the display settings. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display and check that the monitor is set to its native resolution and a refresh rate it supports. If the flicker changes after correcting an unsupported setting, keep the supported value.
  3. Inspect and reseat the video cable. Check both ends for a loose connection or visible damage, then reconnect it securely. Replace a cable if it is damaged or testing points to it; choose a connector compatible with both the computer and monitor. A new cable is not a universal fix.
  4. Try another available port or connection type. If the monitor and computer offer another compatible connection, test it. A change in the symptom can help identify a connection or cable problem.
  5. Test the monitor with another computer, if possible. If flickering follows the monitor, the fault may be with the monitor; if it occurs only with the original computer, investigate that computer’s settings, driver, or connection. Persistent flickering may indicate defective display hardware.

Reduce discomfort while you troubleshoot

Set brightness and contrast to comfortable levels, take visual breaks, and reduce glare from windows or lights. The Ministry of Health recommends the 20-20-20 break routine. OSHA also notes that excessive light and glare can contribute to eyestrain or headaches; reducing glare can improve comfort but will not repair faulty hardware: OSHA: Computer Workstations—Workstation Environment.

Stop prolonged viewing if symptoms are occurring. The Ministry of Health advises medical review for redness, blurry or watery vision together with light sensitivity. Seek medical advice for persistent or concerning eye symptoms rather than assuming the display is the only cause.
