A Samsung washer may not connect because the model lacks Wi-Fi, SmartThings setup is incomplete, the washer is not in pairing mode, or the saved network details or signal are unsuitable. Check compatibility first, then work through the app, network and pairing steps below. Controls and requirements vary by model, so use the manual for your exact washer.

1. Confirm that your washer supports Wi-Fi

Not every Samsung washer can join SmartThings. Samsung’s Smart Care guidance distinguishes Smart Care from SmartThings: a Smart Care button alone does not indicate Wi-Fi capability. Look for a Smart Control button or Wi-Fi indicator, then verify the exact model in its user manual.

2. Check SmartThings and your Samsung account

  • Update the SmartThings app and sign in to the Samsung account you intend to use for the appliance.
  • Use the app’s add-device flow and select the washer. Follow the prompts for your model rather than assuming every washer uses the same sequence.
  • If the washer was registered before or is already connected to a network, setup may differ. Samsung’s SmartThings connection guidance covers cases where a device is not recognized or will not connect.

3. Verify the Wi-Fi network and password

For the washer software-update connection process, Samsung specifies a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi network and says its network name should contain only letters and numbers. These are requirements for the process described on Samsung’s washer software update page; requirements can differ by model and use case. Check your washer’s manual before treating them as universal SmartThings rules.

Confirm the password by connecting another device to the same network. If your router combines 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz bands under one name, consult the washer’s manual or router settings to confirm that the applicable 2.4 GHz network is available during setup.

4. Check signal where the washer sits

Signal strength at the appliance can matter even if Wi-Fi works elsewhere in the home. Samsung says, “If Wi-Fi signal is too weak the Washer might not connect,” and suggests moving the router closer. If you cannot move it, first establish that coverage is weak at the washer; a range extender is a possible option, not a Samsung-guaranteed fix.

5. Reconnect after a Wi-Fi name or password change

If you recently changed your network name or password, the washer may still have the old details. Samsung says some SmartThings devices let you change Wi-Fi details in the app. If no Wi-Fi change option appears for your device, you may need to reset its network information and reconnect it. See Samsung’s instructions for changing Wi-Fi network properties.

6. Put the washer into pairing mode

On applicable models, holding Smart Control until “AP” appears puts the washer into a setup mode for SmartThings. Then continue with the app’s prompts. The button sequence is model-specific; check the manual if your panel differs.

If stale network details are preventing setup, Samsung’s washer reset instructions describe a network reset using AP/OK button steps on applicable models. A network reset clears stored Wi-Fi information; do not use an unfamiliar button sequence on a different model.

7. Try a power cycle—but distinguish it from a network reset

For a basic glitch, unplug the washer or switch off its breaker, wait about 1 to 5 minutes, then restore power. This power cycle is not the same as a network reset and does not specifically clear saved Wi-Fi details. Samsung warns that resets can erase error-code history, so record any displayed code before resetting and avoid repeated resets.

8. If it still will not connect, capture the failure details

Contact Samsung support with the exact model code and useful symptoms. Note where setup fails in SmartThings, including any percentage or step shown, any message on the washer, and whether another device can connect to the same Wi-Fi. Samsung’s general SmartThings troubleshooting can point to network issues, but these details are needed to narrow down a specific washer problem.
