A Samsung phone that keeps dropping its car connection can be dealing with a loose or unsuitable USB data connection, a wireless Android Auto setup problem, an outdated vehicle system, or unstable Bluetooth pairing. The right fix depends on what disconnects: Android Auto projection, or just Bluetooth calls and music. First identify the connection mode, then follow the matching checks below.
First identify what is disconnecting
Samsung lists USB, Bluetooth, AUX and Android Auto as different ways to connect a Galaxy phone to a car. Android Auto compatibility depends on both the phone and the vehicle, and a car that supports wired Android Auto does not necessarily support wireless Android Auto. - Android Auto disappears from the dashboard: use the wired or wireless Android Auto steps, depending on whether the phone is plugged in.
- Calls or music stop, but Android Auto remains available: troubleshoot Bluetooth pairing.
- The phone is plugged in: test the USB data path before changing wireless or Bluetooth settings.
Similar symptoms can come from the phone, cable, port, saved pairing or car infotainment system. The symptoms alone do not establish one universal cause.

A wired connection needs a reliable USB data path. A cable may charge the phone but still fail to carry data reliably. Samsung recommends a high-quality cable, trying another supported car port and checking the phone’s USB port for debris. Some vehicles require a particular connector, such as USB-A to USB-C or Micro-USB-B. Google recommends a cable under one metre and connecting directly, without a hub or extension. - Confirm that the car supports Android Auto and select the correct USB or Android Auto input if the vehicle requires it.
- Try a short, high-quality cable that supports data and has the connector your car requires. Connect the phone directly to the car, not through an extension or hub.
- Try another USB port that the vehicle supports for Android Auto. Some ports may charge only or serve a different purpose.
- Inspect the phone’s USB port for dirt or debris. Avoid inserting anything that could damage the connector.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system, then reconnect.
A cable or port test is a way to isolate the connection path, not a guaranteed fix; a vehicle setting, software issue or phone-side problem may still be involved.
If wireless Android Auto disconnects
Check that the exact vehicle supports wireless Android Auto; compatibility with Android Auto alone is not enough. Follow the car’s manual for its wireless pairing procedure, and make sure Bluetooth and Wi-Fi are enabled. Samsung’s UK support page lists Android 8.0 or later, a data plan and 5 GHz Wi-Fi support among wireless Android Auto requirements. Requirements and compatibility can vary by phone, vehicle and market, so verify them for your specific setup. Samsung’s UK guidance has the regional requirements; Chevrolet’s wireless Android Auto instructions also call for Bluetooth and Wi-Fi to be enabled for its vehicles.

- Check the vehicle manual or manufacturer compatibility information for wireless Android Auto support.
- Turn on Bluetooth and Wi-Fi on the phone, then repeat the vehicle’s wireless setup procedure.
- Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the car’s infotainment settings.
- Restart the phone and infotainment system. Check for available phone, Android Auto and vehicle-system updates.
Chevrolet’s setup instructions are specific to Chevrolet vehicles; other manufacturers may use different menus and procedures.
If only Bluetooth calls or audio drop
When Android Auto is not the issue and only calls or media stop, refresh the Bluetooth connection rather than troubleshooting a USB cable. Google’s instructions apply to Android generally and note that Samsung phones use a customized version of Android, so menu names can differ. Google’s Bluetooth pairing guidance describes the general process.

- Turn Bluetooth off and back on, then restart the phone and the car’s infotainment system.
- If the connection still drops, remove the car from the phone’s saved Bluetooth devices and delete the phone from the car’s stored-device list.
- Pair the phone and car again, following the vehicle manual.
Check software and the car’s system
Outdated phone or infotainment software can contribute to connection problems. Install available phone software and Android Auto updates, check whether the vehicle manufacturer offers an infotainment or receiver firmware update, and make sure Android Auto is enabled in the car. Restart the infotainment system after updates or setting changes. Update locations and procedures are vehicle-specific, so use the owner’s manual or manufacturer support rather than assuming the same menu applies to every car. Samsung and Google both direct users to the vehicle maker for car compatibility and infotainment help. Samsung support notes that software or firmware updates may resolve issues on affected vehicles; Google’s Android Auto help also advises checking vehicle compatibility and manufacturer guidance.

Use a simple comparison to narrow down whether the problem follows the phone or the car. Note the Galaxy model and software version, car year and model, connection mode, and whether the failure affects projection or only Bluetooth audio. Then check whether another phone works in the same car and whether your Galaxy works in another compatible car. These comparisons can help isolate the failing side, but they do not diagnose a cause by themselves.
