Your Samsung Galaxy may start in Safe Mode because Volume Down was pressed while the phone was booting. A case pressing the button can cause this unintentionally. Safe Mode also helps diagnose problems by disabling downloaded apps; restarting normally usually exits it.
What Safe Mode means on a Samsung Galaxy
Safe Mode starts the phone with third-party apps disabled. Samsung describes it as a way to identify and remove an app that may be causing trouble. It is a diagnostic setting, not by itself evidence that the phone is damaged or infected.
Samsung lists issues such as freezing, crashing, lag, camera problems, and audio or connectivity trouble among the symptoms that Safe Mode can help investigate. See Samsung’s Safe Mode instructions.
Why your phone may have entered Safe Mode
Volume Down was pressed during startup
On supported Galaxy models, holding Volume Down as the phone starts can trigger Safe Mode. Samsung Korea notes that an unintended press during boot can cause the phone to enter this mode. A protective cover that presses the key is one possible reason; remove the case and check whether the key moves freely. The guidance does not establish that a stuck or damaged button is the cause, but if the key does not move normally, device-specific support may help.

Someone selected Safe Mode intentionally
Samsung also documents entering Safe Mode from the power menu: touch and hold Power off, then tap Safe mode. This may explain the change if you or someone else was troubleshooting the phone.

A downloaded app may be causing a separate problem
If you entered Safe Mode to investigate a symptom, the mode helps determine whether a downloaded app is involved. The phone entering Safe Mode does not, on its own, identify an app as the cause.

How to turn Safe Mode off
- Restart the phone normally. Use the phone’s power menu to restart. Samsung says a normal restart returns the device to normal mode.
- Use the notification if it appears. On supported versions, tap the Safe Mode notification and choose Turn off.
- If Safe Mode returns on the next boot, remove the case. Make sure it is not pressing Volume Down, then restart and check whether the phone starts normally.
Samsung notes that screens and settings can differ by model, software version, and carrier. Its US instructions are at Power on your Galaxy phone or tablet in Safe mode.

Use Safe Mode to investigate an app-related symptom
If you originally entered Safe Mode because the phone was misbehaving, use it long enough to see whether the same problem occurs. The result helps narrow the next step:

Start with apps installed or updated around the time the problem began. Remove one candidate, restart normally, and retest before moving on to another. This makes it easier to tell whether a particular removal changed the behavior.

For persistent symptoms, Samsung’s Galaxy phone or tablet troubleshooting guidance discusses further steps. A factory reset may be considered if downloaded apps do not explain the problem, but it is a later measure—not an automatic requirement. Preserve important data before resetting.
When Safe Mode keeps appearing
- Remove the case and check whether it obstructs or presses Volume Down.
- Check that the button moves normally and is not being held during startup.
- If Safe Mode was selected intentionally, restart normally to leave it.
- If the phone still boots into Safe Mode after these checks, consult Samsung support for guidance specific to your model.
