A PlayStation that will not connect can be failing to join Wi-Fi, losing its link to the router, having trouble reaching PlayStation Network, or encountering a DNS or router issue. Check PlayStation Network status and run the console’s connection test first; the failed test stage and displayed error code help narrow down the cause.
Find out where the connection is failing
First check PlayStation Network service status. If it reports an outage or maintenance, wait and try again rather than changing your home network settings.
Next, run the built-in test and note which stage fails and the complete error code:
- PS5: Settings > Network > Settings > Test Internet Connection.
- PS4: Settings > Network > Test Internet Connection.
A failure to connect to the wireless network points toward Wi-Fi signal or router settings. If the console joins the network but cannot reach PlayStation Network, the issue may instead involve service availability, the router, the ISP, or DNS. Use the full code with the PlayStation error-code index to find guidance for that specific error.

Try the simple fixes before changing settings
Restart the console and network equipment
Restart the console. Turn off the router and modem, leave them off for at least five minutes, then turn them back on and retry the connection test. This restart interval is recommended in PlayStation’s PS5 NW-102650-4 troubleshooting guidance and its PS4 NW-31205-1 guidance.
Improve the Wi-Fi link
Move the console closer to the router and reduce obstacles between them where practical. Check whether other devices are using substantial bandwidth. If the console connects after you change its position, the wireless signal or interference is a likely factor.

Try Ethernet as a diagnostic test
If possible, connect the console to the router with a LAN cable and run the test again. If Ethernet works but Wi-Fi does not, focus on wireless signal, placement, or the router’s Wi-Fi settings. A wired connection can help distinguish a Wi-Fi problem, but it will not resolve a PlayStation Network outage or an ISP fault. PlayStation’s PS4 Pro quick-start guide also recommends LAN for a more stable network connection.
Check your console’s connection setup
Set up or reconnect a PS5
Go to Settings > Network > Settings > Set up Internet Connection. Choose the connection type and enter the required network security information. See PlayStation’s internet connection setup instructions.

Set up or reconnect a PS4 over Wi-Fi
Go to Settings > Network > Set Up Internet Connection > Use Wi-Fi. Choose Easy to see saved and detected access points. If your network is not listed, choose Set Up Manually. Custom is available when you need to adjust connection settings. The same setup options are covered in PlayStation’s internet connection instructions.
Use the error code to choose the next step
These examples apply to the named console and code; they are not interchangeable fixes for every connection problem.

- PS4 NW-31291-6: PlayStation describes this as an inability to connect to Wi-Fi, with signal strength possibly too weak. Test the connection, restart network equipment, move the console nearer the router, and reduce obstructions. See the NW-31291-6 support page.
- PS4 NW-31205-1: This code indicates an unstable or too-weak connection to a PlayStation server. The official steps include checking bandwidth use, router/modem support, router firmware, Wi-Fi placement, and, where relevant, ports or DNS. See the NW-31205-1 support page.
- PS4 NW-31253-4: This code describes a delayed or unstable DNS-server response. Restart the network, check whether the ISP is doing maintenance, and verify any manually entered DNS settings. See the NW-31253-4 support page.
- PS5 NW-102650-4: This code means the console cannot connect to the server. PlayStation advises checking service status, restarting the console and router/modem, trying Ethernet, improving Wi-Fi placement, and updating router firmware. Ports or DNS are later checks if simpler steps do not help. See the NW-102650-4 support page.
Leave DNS and router changes until later
If basic checks fail, confirm that the router firmware is current and ask your ISP or router provider for help with device support and configuration. For a DNS-specific error, check for ISP maintenance and carefully review any custom DNS entries. PlayStation says temporarily changing DNS may help with PS5 code NW-102650-4, but it does not establish one DNS provider or setting as a universal fix.

Do not open ports or assign a static IP as a blanket remedy. Port advice depends on the console and error. For PS5 NW-102650-4, PlayStation lists TCP ports 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480, and UDP ports 3478, 3479, and 49152–65535. For PS4 NW-31205-1, it lists TCP ports 80, 443, 3478, 3479, and 3480, and UDP ports 3478 and 3479. These are specific to those support pages; consult the matching page and your ISP or router provider before changing router settings.
