If your PlayStation displays a temperature warning or repeatedly shuts down from heat, turn it off and let it cool. Then give it open space, clear its vents, and clean away vent dust only with the console unplugged. If the problem returns after these checks, stop using it and contact official PlayStation support for your model and region.
What can make a PlayStation overheat?
Sony’s guidance points first to restricted airflow and dust, not to one universal hardware fault. Vents may be blocked, the console may be crowded into a narrow space or closed cabinet, or it may be placed on long-fiber carpet. Dust can also build up around vents. These conditions can interfere with the console’s ability to move heat away.
For PS5, Sony recommends leaving at least 10 cm of free space around each side and keeping vents unobstructed. Its safety guide cautions against using the console in a closed cabinet or another place where heat can build up. Sony’s PS5 noise guidance and PS5 Safety Guide give these setup instructions.

Is loud fan noise the same as overheating?
No. Sony says the PS5 fan may temporarily run faster and become louder during some games and applications to cool the system. Fan noise alone does not establish that the console is overheating. A high-temperature notification or repeated heat-related shutdown is a different signal and needs attention.

What to do when a temperature warning appears
- Turn the console off. Let it cool before using it again. Sony warns that continuing to use a PS5 while its high-temperature notification is displayed may lead to the console becoming non-operational. See PlayStation’s power indicator and temperature-warning guidance.
- Move it to an open location. Avoid closed cabinets, cramped spaces, nearby heat sources, and long-fiber carpet. For a PS5, leave at least 10 cm of free space around each side, as Sony recommends, and ensure the vents are not covered.
- Check and clean the vents safely. Power the console off and disconnect its AC power cable before cleaning. Sony recommends using a low-powered vacuum around PS5 vent dust; its safety guide specifies a handheld vacuum for dust buildup. Sony’s PS4 safety guide also recommends a low-powered vacuum. Follow the guidance for your console: PS5 vent and noise guidance and the PS4 CUH-2116AB Safety Guide.
- If you installed an M.2 SSD in a PS5, check its heat-dissipation parts. Sony’s PS5 Safety Guide says to check that these parts have not detached.
The cited Sony guidance supports external vent cleaning; it does not establish that compressed air, liquids, or internal disassembly are appropriate fixes. Do not guess at an internal component failure based on heat or noise alone.
When to contact PlayStation support
If a warning or heat-related shutdown happens again after the console has cooled and you have corrected its placement and vent dust, stop repeated use and seek official help. Sony directs PS4 users with continuing overheating issues to PlayStation Repairs. For PS5, use the support route for your exact model and region or contact customer support if it still does not operate properly. The symptoms alone cannot identify which internal part, if any, has failed.
