A 4G icon usually means your phone is using LTE because 5G is unavailable at your location, a setting or battery saver has selected LTE, or your phone, plan, SIM/eSIM, or carrier setup is not compatible. The icon alone does not mean the phone is broken. Check the causes below before considering a replacement.
What a 4G icon means
Your phone can use 4G when 5G service is not usable where you are, or when it has selected LTE instead. Coverage can vary by location, and a carrier’s 5G coverage may be narrower than its 4G coverage. Google says Pixel phones fall back to 4G or a lower network when 5G is unavailable. The status icon is not a speed test or a guarantee of a sustained 5G connection. Apple says the iPhone 5G icon depends on carrier network configuration and may, in rare cases, appear without 5G coverage. Why your phone may not show 5G
5G coverage is unavailable at your current location
Your phone may switch to LTE if 5G coverage is absent or unusable where you are. Check your carrier’s coverage information for your location and look for a local outage. If practical, compare the indicator in another area.

Your network mode is set to LTE or automatic
An LTE-only setting prevents the phone from using 5G. On iPhone, 5G Auto can also choose LTE when the phone determines 5G would not noticeably improve the experience. Apple describes this as a way to conserve battery. Apple Support
Battery saving is disabling 5G
Apple says Low Power Mode disables 5G, with some exceptions on iPhone 12 and iPhone 13. Google says Battery Saver turns off 5G on Pixel phones. Turning the mode off temporarily can help identify whether it is the cause, but it may increase battery use. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help

Your plan or SIM/eSIM is not set up for 5G
Your carrier must support 5G and your plan must include access to it. Apple also notes that an older SIM may need carrier setup to work with 5G. Ask your carrier to confirm plan eligibility and that your SIM or eSIM is activated and provisioned for 5G. Apple Support

Your phone variant may not work on your carrier’s 5G network
A phone advertised as 5G-capable does not necessarily support every carrier’s network in every country or region. Apple’s guidance requires an iPhone 12 or later, a 5G-supporting provider, and a 5G plan. Google cautions that not all Pixel 4a (5G) and later phones work on every 5G network. How to troubleshoot the 4G indicator
- Check coverage and outages. Look up 5G service for your current location with your carrier, check for a reported outage, and compare in another location if possible. Google Pixel Phone Help

- Verify your plan and SIM/eSIM setup. Ask the carrier whether your plan includes 5G and whether your SIM or eSIM is activated and provisioned for it. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help
- Check the network mode. On iPhone, open Settings > Cellular (or Mobile Data) > Cellular Data Options > Voice & Data. Confirm that LTE is not selected if you want to allow 5G; 5G Auto can still choose LTE when it is more appropriate. On Pixel, open Settings > Network & Internet > SIMs > Preferred network type. - Temporarily turn off the battery-saving mode. Disable Low Power Mode on iPhone or Battery Saver on Pixel, then check whether 5G appears. If it does, decide whether the extra battery use is worth keeping the setting off. Apple Support · Google Pixel Phone Help

When to consider a different phone
Consider a replacement only after confirming that your current phone is incompatible with your carrier’s 5G network. If you do compare devices, check the exact model variant’s compatibility with the carrier and local 5G network, rather than relying only on a general 5G label.
