If your PC does not detect an ultrawide monitor, first check that the monitor is powered on and set to the input used by its cable. Then press Windows+P and choose Extend. If the display is still missing, simplify the connection, test another cable or video port, and use Windows’ Detect control. A monitor that appears but has the wrong resolution needs a different check from one Windows cannot see at all.

Start with the monitor and Windows display mode

  1. Check power and input. Make sure the monitor is on, then use its controls to select the input that matches the cable connected to the PC, such as HDMI or DisplayPort.
  2. Choose Extend. Press Windows+P and select Extend. This tells Windows to use the external monitor rather than showing the PC screen only.
  3. Reseat the connection. Check that the cable is firmly connected at both ends. Microsoft’s guidance begins with this basic check: “Make sure the cable connecting your PC to your external monitor is secure.” Microsoft Support’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide covers Windows 10 and Windows 11.

Isolate the cable, port, or accessory

Test one part of the connection at a time so that a change gives you useful evidence about the cause.

  • Temporarily remove a dock, dongle, or adapter and connect the PC directly to the monitor if possible. Accessories can cause conflicts.
  • Try another known-good cable and another video output on the PC. Microsoft lists HDMI and DisplayPort among common video outputs. If a swap works, it points to the cable or port you replaced; it does not rule out a separate settings, driver, or compatibility problem.
  • If you can, connect the monitor to another system. If it works there, focus on the original PC or its connection path; if it does not, the monitor or its input path may need attention.

Do not assume that an ultrawide requires a particular cable type or generation. The right connection depends on the PC, monitor, and requested display mode. Before choosing a cable, dock, or adapter, verify that the connectors fit both devices, the PC port carries video, and the complete path supports the resolution and refresh rate you want.

Ask Windows to detect the monitor

If the physical checks do not make the display appear, open Settings > System > Display > Multiple displays and select Detect. The control is available in Windows 10 and Windows 11; see Microsoft’s instructions for using multiple monitors.

If Windows sees it but the resolution is wrong

Detection and resolution are separate issues. In Settings > System > Display, select the ultrawide monitor and inspect the Display resolution choices. Microsoft recommends the option marked for the display in ordinary cases. A non-native resolution can make the picture look less sharp, small, centered, bordered, or stretched. An unexpected set of choices can also indicate that the graphics driver needs attention. See Microsoft’s guide to changing screen resolution and layout.

Refresh the display driver and check display limits

If the monitor, cable, input, and Windows mode checks have not helped, move on to the graphics driver. Microsoft’s troubleshooting guidance includes resetting the graphics driver with a keyboard shortcut in some cases, restarting the PC, rolling back a driver after an update, or reinstalling it. Treat these as later steps, not substitutes for checking a disconnected cable. Use Windows Update or the PC or graphics-device manufacturer’s support route rather than an unverified third-party driver updater.

If one external display works but another does not, the graphics adapter may be limited in how many displays it can support. Check the PC or GPU manufacturer’s specifications, and check the dock or adapter too if one is in the signal path. A splitter duplicates a video signal; it does not create an independent extended display.

What details help narrow down the cause

If the issue persists, record the PC or GPU model, monitor model, Windows version, exact cable and port path (including any dock or adapter), whether the monitor displays “No signal,” and the resolution and refresh rate you want. Those details are needed to assess device-specific compatibility; the troubleshooting steps above do not establish a universal ultrawide requirement.
