If your Open Graph image looks cropped on LinkedIn or Discord, first check the image URL and its actual dimensions in the deployed page’s HTML—not just your Next.js component. LinkedIn documents a 1.91:1 image ratio, a minimum size of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a 5 MB maximum; it also displays images narrower than 401 pixels as thumbnails. Discord’s current official crop and size rules are not established here, so treat its preview as something to verify rather than assuming a particular required ratio.

Why the same Open Graph image can look different

An Open Graph preview is assembled by the destination platform from a page’s metadata and the linked image. The platform may present the same source image differently in different sharing contexts. A preview that looks cropped therefore does not necessarily mean your Next.js source image itself was altered.

There are two useful distinctions: whether the page points to the intended image, and whether the destination platform presents that image as expected. Check both. LinkedIn publishes image guidance; the evidence here does not establish an official Discord image ratio, size threshold, or crop rule.

What LinkedIn’s image guidance says

LinkedIn’s sharing guidance asks for og:title, og:image, og:description, and og:url. It recommends an image ratio of 1.91:1, minimum dimensions of 1200 × 627 pixels, and a maximum file size of 5 MB. LinkedIn says images less than 401 pixels wide display as thumbnails. These figures are from LinkedIn Help, whose page was last updated two years before the cited access: LinkedIn’s shareable-website guidance.

  • Compatible with Nintendo Switch 2’s new GameChat mode
  • Auto-Light Balance: RightLight boosts brightness by up to 50%, reducing shadows so you look your best—compared to previous-generation Logitech webcams (1)

  • Built-In Mic: The built-in microphone lets others hear you clearly during video calls
  • Easy Plug-And-Play: The Brio 101 works with most video calling platforms, including Microsoft Teams, Zoom and Google Meet—no hassle; it just works

If LinkedIn shows a small thumbnail, confirm that the og:image URL resolves to your intended full-size image, not a small derivative. If a correctly sized image is missing altogether, also check whether LinkedIn can fetch it; correct dimensions alone do not ensure crawler access.

What is—and is not—established about Discord

The available evidence does not verify a current official Discord image ratio, size threshold, or crop specification. That means advice to use a particular Discord-specific dimension should be treated as a practical experiment, not an official rule. After correcting the page metadata and image, inspect the actual Discord preview rather than assuming LinkedIn’s published requirements define Discord’s behavior.

Check the deployed page before changing the artwork

  1. Inspect the shared route’s final HTML. Open the deployed page in a browser, use developer tools to inspect its document head, and find the actual og:image value. Confirm that the metadata belongs to the exact route being shared and points to the intended image. Next.js explains how to inspect generated metadata in its metadata and Open Graph images guide.
  2. Verify the image itself. Check its intrinsic pixel dimensions, aspect ratio, and file size. For LinkedIn, compare them with its 1200 × 627 minimum, 1.91:1 recommendation, and 5 MB maximum. Keep important text and subjects away from the edges as a practical design precaution, not as a documented LinkedIn or Discord safe-zone requirement.
  3. Open the image URL without signing in. Fetch it as a public, unauthenticated resource and confirm that it serves the expected image bytes. LinkedIn warns that a site may block its image fetch or put an image in a protected directory or website. See LinkedIn’s troubleshooting guidance.
  4. Deploy, then inspect the preview again. The image target, metadata, and public access all need to be correct. Do not assume a preview will refresh immediately: Next.js says generated metadata-image routes are cached by default unless Dynamic APIs or dynamic configuration affect the route, and no authoritative LinkedIn or Discord refresh interval is established here.

Set the Open Graph image in Next.js App Router

Next.js App Router supports both route-segment image files and metadata configured through the Metadata API. Its file convention emits image metadata tags, including type and dimensions, for static image files. The most specific route-segment image takes precedence over one defined higher in the route tree. See the Next.js Open Graph image convention and the Next.js metadata guide.

Next.js documents JPG, JPEG, PNG, and GIF support for this convention. A colocated file avoids separately synchronizing its dimensions with a hand-written image URL. The convention has a documented 8 MB maximum; if the same file is intended for LinkedIn, keep it within LinkedIn’s stricter 5 MB limit.

Option 2: Generate a route-specific image

For generated images, create an opengraph-image.tsx route. The documented example exports alt, size, and contentType, and uses ImageResponse; its example size is 1200 × 630 pixels. That is an example, not a universal platform requirement. Next.js notes that ImageResponse supports flexbox and a subset of CSS, so arbitrary browser CSS should not be assumed to render identically. Generated metadata-image routes are statically optimized by default unless Dynamic APIs or uncached data affect the route. See the file convention documentation.

app/blog/[slug]/opengraph-image.tsx

Next.js documents an 8 MB maximum for an opengraph-image file. A generated image intended for LinkedIn should also meet LinkedIn’s 5 MB cap; the tighter destination limit governs.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Option 3: Define image metadata explicitly

You can also define Open Graph images through metadata or generateMetadata. Next.js documents image entries with a URL, width, height, and optional alt text; the URL must be absolute. Use values that describe the image actually served, and ensure the metadata applies to the shared route. See the Next.js Metadata API.

Common causes and the right fix

What you see What to check What to do
LinkedIn shows a thumbnail Whether the image linked by og:image is less than 401 pixels wide or points to a small derivative Use the intended full-size image; LinkedIn says images narrower than 401 pixels display as thumbnails.
LinkedIn crops or presents the artwork differently than expected The image’s real dimensions and ratio, plus whether the correct route metadata is deployed For LinkedIn, use its 1.91:1 recommendation and at least 1200 × 627 pixels; keep important content away from the edges as a design precaution.
The preview has no image Whether the public image URL serves the expected bytes and whether a crawler can access it Remove access barriers or use a publicly fetchable image location; LinkedIn identifies blocked fetching and protected locations as possible causes.
Discord’s preview differs from LinkedIn’s The actual deployed metadata and Discord preview Correct the shared page’s metadata, then inspect Discord’s result. Do not treat an unverified Discord dimension recommendation as an official specification.

Keep the platform limits distinct
