If your Google Nest device won’t connect to Wi-Fi, first check whether other devices can get online, then identify your Nest product and troubleshoot the matching issue: setup-phone settings, Wi-Fi compatibility, credentials, signal, or a recent router change. Steps differ for thermostats, cameras and doorbells, speakers and displays, so a fix for one type may not apply to another.

Start by identifying the failure

Note the Nest product type and model, and pinpoint what happens: the network is missing, the password is rejected, setup cannot finish, or the device was working and has gone offline. Also note whether you recently changed your router or Wi-Fi password. Those distinctions determine which steps are useful.

  • Every device is offline: troubleshoot the internet connection or router first.
  • Only Nest is affected: check its network compatibility, signal, and product-specific setup instructions.
  • The network is missing: investigate band support, discovery, and hidden-network settings.
  • The password is rejected: verify the exact password and security type.
  • The problem began after a router or password change: restore the previous network details or update the Nest using its model-specific procedure.

Google’s [Wi-Fi and connection troubleshooting guide] covers Nest products generally; the relevant steps vary by product.

Check whether your home internet works

On a phone or computer connected to your home Wi-Fi, open a webpage. On a phone, turn off cellular data—or enable airplane mode and then turn Wi-Fi back on—so cellular service cannot make a failed Wi-Fi connection appear to work.

Google Nest Wifi - AC2200 - Mesh WiFi System - Wifi Router - 2200 Sq Ft Coverage - 1 pack
  • Each nest Wi Fi router provides up to 2200 square feet of fast, reliable Wi Fi coverage for your home. [1]

If other devices also cannot get online, restore your internet service or contact your internet service provider before troubleshooting the Nest. If the internet works on other devices, continue with the Nest-specific checks. Google has separate instructions for thermostats that cannot connect to the app and for Nest speakers or displays that cannot connect to Wi-Fi.

Prepare the phone or tablet used for setup

Connect the phone or tablet to the same Wi-Fi network the Nest should use. Turn on Bluetooth, and use the Google Home or Nest app appropriate for the product and setup flow. On iOS 14 or later, allow the app local-network access. If setup still fails, quit and reopen the app, restart the phone, and retry.

Google’s pairing troubleshooting steps cover additional app and device checks. For camera setup, scan the camera’s QR code before mounting it and keep the QR sticker for later setup or troubleshooting; see Google’s camera setup instructions.

Check Wi-Fi band and network compatibility

Wi-Fi band support depends on the Nest model. Do not assume that every Nest needs 2.4 GHz or that every model can use 5 GHz. Google says the 2nd generation Nest Thermostat and Nest Protect support only 2.4 GHz. For speakers and displays on a dual-band router, Google suggests trying both 2.4 GHz and 5 GHz. Camera radio specifications vary by model; check the camera and doorbell technical specifications for your device. The cited camera network-discovery guidance says that, in Canada and Europe, Nest outdoor products are designed for 2.4 GHz, while indoor Nest products may use either band.

Some network types are incompatible or discouraged regardless of signal strength. Captive-portal networks, which require signing in through a web page, and enterprise 802.1x/RADIUS networks do not work with Nest products. Google also discourages public or open Wi-Fi and someone else’s guest network. A phone hotspot may be unreliable or unsupported depending on the product and situation. See Google’s network compatibility guidance.

If the Wi-Fi network is missing or credentials fail

For cameras and doorbells: the network is not listed

Wait for network discovery to finish and scroll to the bottom of the list. If the network is hidden, enter its exact name (SSID) manually and select the correct security type. A spelling error or mismatched security setting can prevent connection. Google’s camera network discovery steps explain these checks.

Move the camera or router closer and try again. Google notes that “A couple of feet can make a big difference.” If a camera must stay farther away and coverage is the problem, a Wi-Fi extender may help; it will not fix an internet outage, incorrect password, incompatible network, or unsupported band.

For cameras and doorbells: the password or connection is rejected

Re-enter the Wi-Fi password carefully and check for an incorrect-password message. If setup points to firewall or network settings, first verify that the internet works. Router firewall rules or MAC/IP filtering can interfere, but only change them temporarily if you understand the router controls; restore your previous security settings afterward.

Recover after changing the router or password

If you replaced the router but can still use the old Wi-Fi name (SSID) and password, restoring those details on the new router is often the simplest way to let Nest devices reconnect. Otherwise, follow the procedure for the specific product; connection details are not updated the same way across thermostats, speakers, cameras, and other devices.

For cameras and doorbells, Google says Wi-Fi details cannot be changed in the Google Home app. The usual method is to remove or reset the device and set it up again. Save any important video clips before starting: Google’s camera and doorbell Wi-Fi change instructions explain the process.

Restart and retry before resetting

Nest devices retry connecting periodically, but an offline device may need in-person troubleshooting. Restarting is a sensible next step; factory reset is not a good first move because it may require setting the device up again and can affect saved camera clips.

  1. Quit and reopen the Google Home or Nest app.
  2. Restart the phone or tablet used for setup.
  3. Restart the Nest device and, if needed, the router and modem.
  4. Move the device closer to the router and try the correct supported Wi-Fi band.
  5. Retry setup. If the problem continues, use the official setup or error-code instructions for the exact product and message.
