Your FICO score can change whenever the information used to calculate it changes—or when you are looking at a different bureau report, score model, or reporting date. A payment made today, for example, may not affect the score until the creditor sends an updated balance to a bureau and that data is incorporated into a newly requested score.
Before treating a number as an error, record which bureau, score brand, model version, report date, and score-generation date produced it. Then compare the underlying credit reports. If a report contains information that is factually wrong or incomplete, document the problem and dispute it with both the bureau and the company that supplied the data.
What a FICO score measures
A FICO score is a point-in-time calculation based on information in a credit report. It is not a permanent rating attached to you. When a lender or consumer service requests a score, the scoring model evaluates the report data available at that moment. A later request can produce a different number if any account, balance, payment status, inquiry, or other report detail has changed.

The same person can legitimately see several scores at once. Credit bureaus may have different versions of an account file, and scoring products may use different FICO versions or an entirely different brand of score. A lender may also use a model that is not the one shown in a consumer-facing service. Numbers from different models should not be treated as a before-and-after change in one identical score.

Why did my FICO score go down?
An updated balance changed your credit use
Creditors report balances on their own schedules. A card payment can reduce what you owe today without appearing in bureau data until the issuer sends its next update. Conversely, a statement balance or newly reported high balance can appear before your payment is reflected. Because available credit and reported balances are score inputs, a temporary increase in reported credit use can lower a score even when you have paid on time.
Check the account’s reported balance, credit limit, and last-updated date on each bureau file. Compare those dates with your statement closing date and payment date. A score generated before the lower balance was reported will not reflect the payment; a later score may move after the update is processed.
A late payment or other serious event was reported
A newly reported late payment, bankruptcy, collection, or similar event can materially change a score. The effect depends on the rest of the file, including prior payment history and the age and status of other accounts. No reliable universal point deduction applies to every person, so be cautious of promises that a particular event will cost an exact number of points.

Confirm the account belongs to you, the month reported is correct, and whether the creditor marked the account as current, delinquent, charged off, or otherwise changed.
New credit activity appeared
A newly opened account can alter several parts of a file at once: the account is new, a hard inquiry may be listed, the average age of accounts can change, and a new balance may be reported. Multiple applications can create several inquiries. The same activity may have different effects under different score versions and for different credit profiles.
Review the inquiry section and recently opened accounts on every report. An inquiry that you recognize is not automatically an error; an inquiry or account you do not recognize should be investigated with the listed creditor.

An account aged or information aged off
Credit files change with time even when you do not apply for credit. Accounts become older, and older adverse entries may eventually leave a report. Educational guidance from myFICO uses a late payment reaching a seven-year mark and an inquiry aging past one year as examples of changes that can affect a file. Those examples are not a universal legal timetable for every item; the applicable period depends on the item type and current rules.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When an entry reaches a reporting limit or an account crosses an age threshold used by a model, the score can move without a new transaction from you. Check the dates associated with the entry and avoid assuming that every negative item follows the same removal rule.
An account was closed or paid off
Paying off or closing an account can change the information available to a scoring model. The result depends on the entire file, including the remaining balances, available limits, account ages, and payment history. Closing an account is not automatically beneficial or harmful, and paying a balance to zero does not guarantee a particular score change.
Compare the account’s status before and after the event. Confirm whether the credit limit is still shown, whether the account remains on the report with its payment history, and whether another account’s balance changed at the same time.
The bureau received information at a different time
The three nationwide bureaus do not necessarily receive or process updates simultaneously. One bureau may show a new balance or account while another still displays an older snapshot. A score based on the older file can differ from one based on the newer file even if both requests were made close together.
Your file contains mixed, fragmented, or incomplete data
Differences in names, addresses, Social Security number fragments, or other identifiers can cause a bureau file to be incomplete or cause information associated with another person to appear. An unfamiliar item deserves investigation, but it is not by itself proof of identity theft. Verify the account details and contact the named creditor before drawing that conclusion.

Why did my credit score change when nothing changed?
“Nothing changed” often means that you did not make a visible transaction. A creditor may have reported a new statement balance, a bureau may have added an update received from a furnisher, or an older item may have crossed an age threshold. Reporting dates also matter: a score calculated from last month’s snapshot can differ from one calculated after this month’s data arrived.
Start by comparing the two score displays as if they were separate products. Record the provider, whether the number is labeled FICO, the score model or version, the bureau, the report date, and the date the score was generated. If any of those fields differ, you are not comparing the same calculation. If all fields match, inspect the report for a changed balance, status, inquiry, account age, or item that was removed.
Why are my FICO scores different between bureaus?
Each bureau maintains its own data file. A creditor may report to all three, to only some, or on different days. One report can therefore contain a different balance, payment status, account limit, inquiry, or public-record entry. A scoring model can produce different results from those files even when the differences look small.

A FICO score from one version is not directly comparable with a score from another version, and a non-FICO score is not a FICO score. Lenders may use a version that a monitoring service does not display. The score label and version are as important as the number.

How do I check my credit reports?
Use AnnualCreditReport.com, the official route identified by the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau for checking reports. Access terms and availability can change, so read the current instructions on the live site. You do not need a paid monitoring subscription to inspect reports or dispute inaccurate information.
- Record the score details. Before pulling reports, write down the provider, score brand, model or version shown, bureau, report date, and score-generation date. Use the same bureau and model for a meaningful before-and-after comparison.
- Obtain the reports. Request the files available through the official access route and save or print each report according to the site’s current instructions. Keep the reports associated with the score dates you are investigating.
- Compare all three bureau files. Do not stop at the bureau connected to the score that alerted you. A detail missing from one file may appear on another, and a discrepancy can explain why displayed scores differ.
- Mark the fields that drive scoring. Highlight account ownership and status, reported balances and limits, payment history, inquiries, recently opened accounts, collections or public-record information, duplicates, and unfamiliar entries.
- Match changes to dates. Look for recently updated balances, payments, account openings, inquiries, status changes, or entries that aged off. Compare the “last reported” or similar date with your statements and transaction records, remembering that lender schedules vary.
- Separate normal differences from factual errors. A different bureau date or model is not an error. A balance that does not match the furnisher’s records, a payment marked late when it was timely, a duplicate account, or an account that is not yours may be inaccurate or incomplete.
What parts of a report should I inspect first?
Accounts and ownership
Confirm that every account belongs to you and that the account type, opening date, status, credit limit, and balance are plausible. Check for accounts listed twice or an account that appears with inconsistent identifying details across bureaus.

Balances and available credit
Compare each reported balance and limit with the relevant statement. A balance can be correct for the bureau’s reporting date even if you paid it afterward. Note which accounts changed and whether the total available credit shown by the bureau is different from the figure you expected.
Payment history
Inspect each month in the payment grid. A single incorrectly reported late month can affect a score, while a correctly reported late payment is not something a dispute can remove simply because it is unfavorable. Gather proof such as payment confirmations, bank records, or correspondence from the creditor.
Inquiries and new accounts
List every hard inquiry and recently opened account. Contact the creditor named beside an unfamiliar inquiry or account to verify whether an application was submitted in your name. Do not confuse a promotional or account-review inquiry with an application inquiry; the report’s labels and the creditor can clarify the difference.
Collections, public records, and other adverse entries
Check the creditor name, amount, status, dates, and whether the same debt appears more than once. Confirm that any public-record information is associated with you and is described accurately. Keep the report page showing the disputed detail.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What should I do if I find an error on my credit report?
Dispute an item only when you can identify a factual inaccuracy or omission. A dispute should explain exactly what is wrong and what the correct information should be; it is not a request to delete accurate negative information.
- Collect supporting records. Gather statements, payment confirmations, account-closure letters, identity documents requested by the bureau, or correspondence that demonstrates the factual problem. Make copies rather than sending irreplaceable originals.
- Identify the item precisely. Record the bureau, creditor or furnisher name, account number as displayed, report date, and the exact field that is wrong. Describe the correction in plain language.
- Dispute with the bureau. Follow the bureau’s current online or mail process and attach copies of relevant evidence. Keep a complete copy of the submission and proof of delivery or confirmation.
- Contact the information furnisher as well. Send the same factual explanation and supporting copies to the company that supplied the data. myFICO’s guidance recommends contacting both the bureau and the information provider.
- Track the investigation. Record submission dates, confirmation numbers, responses, and any additional documents requested. Investigations are usually completed within 30 days unless the dispute is considered frivolous, but timing can vary and the period is not a guarantee.
- Review the result. Obtain the updated report and verify that the specific field was corrected, deleted, or explained. If the response does not address the evidence, follow the bureau’s escalation instructions and preserve the full paper trail.
A correction does not promise a specific score increase. The score also reflects every other item in the file, and a corrected report may be incorporated at a different time than the report you are viewing.

How to compare score-monitoring services without misreading the number
If you use a monitoring product, evaluate what it actually provides rather than assuming every displayed score is equivalent. A service may provide a report, a score, alerts, or some combination. Check whether the score is FICO, which bureau supplies the data, the exact model version, and the date each element was updated.
| Question | What a clear answer looks like | Why you need it |
|---|---|---|
| Which score brand? | The product names FICO or identifies another model | Brand determines whether the number can be compared with a FICO score. |
| Which bureau? | The source bureau is named for the report and score | A different file can explain a different number. |
| Which version? | An exact model or version is displayed | Versions can produce different results from similar data. |
| What is monitored? | Reports, scores, alerts, or a stated combination | An alert does not necessarily include the complete report detail needed to verify a change. |
| What are the dates? | Report-update and score-generation dates are visible | You can match the number to the snapshot that produced it. |
Paid access is optional. It may be useful for recurring score access or bureau alerts, but it is not required to obtain reports through the official route or to submit a dispute. Review current pricing, renewal terms, geography, and model coverage on any provider’s own page before subscribing.
Troubleshooting common score-change scenarios
“I paid my card, but my score fell.”
Check whether the payment posted before the issuer’s reporting date. The bureau may still show the prior statement balance. Compare the reported balance and last-update date with your payment confirmation, then check again after the creditor’s next update.
“Only one bureau shows the drop.”
Compare the three files for a balance, inquiry, account status, or new account present only on that bureau. A timing difference or bureau-specific data can explain the result without indicating a scoring error.
“The app score and lender score are different.”
Record the brand, model version, bureau, and dates for both numbers. If any differ, the values answer different scoring questions. A lender’s model may not be the consumer-facing model shown in an app.
“I do not recognize an account.”
Check the creditor name, opening date, address, and account type, then contact the creditor to verify the application or account. Dispute the entry with the bureau and furnisher if the information is inaccurate or does not belong to you. Keep in mind that an unfamiliar entry requires investigation but is not conclusive proof of identity theft on its own.
“The bureau corrected the report, but the score barely moved.”
Verify that the corrected field appears on the report used for the score and that the score was generated after the correction was incorporated. Other balances, inquiries, account ages, and payment history can outweigh one corrected item, so no fixed point increase should be expected.

- An account or inquiry appears that you cannot connect to any application or creditor relationship.
- A payment is reported late even though your records show it was made on time.
- A balance, limit, account status, or ownership detail is materially wrong.
- The same debt or account is duplicated, making the file appear larger than it is.
- A bankruptcy, collection, or other serious event is listed with incorrect identity or dates.
For any of these situations, save the reports as they currently appear, collect documentary evidence, and begin the bureau-and-furnisher dispute process promptly. Keep every response so you can verify whether the correction reached each bureau where the error appeared.
Bottom line
A changing FICO score usually reflects changing report data, different reporting timestamps, or a different score model—not a mysterious recalculation of your personal worth. Compare the bureau, brand, version, report date, and score date first. Then inspect all three reports, connect changes to balances, payments, inquiries, accounts, and aging information, and dispute only documented inaccuracies with both the bureau and the information furnisher.
