Compare the taste and smell of freshly drawn cold tap water, water boiled in a clean saucepan, and water boiled in your kettle. If only the kettle sample is affected, stale water, scale, or the kettle’s materials are likely causes. If cold tap water is affected too, the cause may be the water supply or household plumbing—not the kettle. Strong, newly appearing, or fuel-like smells warrant prompt contact with your local water utility.
How to tell whether the kettle is the cause
- Try fresh cold tap water. Draw a new glass from the kitchen tap and note whether the unusual taste or smell is already present.
- Boil water in a clean saucepan. Compare it with the cold sample after it has cooled enough to taste safely.
- Boil fresh water in the kettle. Compare that sample with the saucepan-boiled water.
If the odd taste or smell appears only in water boiled in the kettle, focus first on kettle care. If it is also in cold tap water or in both boiled samples, the kettle is less likely to be the sole cause. What can make kettle water taste or smell strange?
New plastic parts or seals
Plastic parts and rubber seals can contribute plastic, medicinal, or TCP-like tastes, particularly in a new plastic kettle. The Drinking Water Inspectorate says these tastes may ease with use, but that is not a guarantee. Follow the first-use instructions for your exact model rather than relying on repeated boiling as a universal fix. For example, Tefal’s KI883D42 instructions say to rinse the interior and boil water once or twice before first use; those directions apply to that model. Mineral scale
Scale is mineral deposit left as water is heated. It is more common in hard-water areas and may look white or chalky; buildup can affect taste and smell. Descale with a product suitable for the kettle’s materials, following both the product label and the appliance manual. Morphy Richards kettle guidance

Descaling methods vary by model and by cleaning agent. Tefal’s KI883D42 manual specifies its own procedures, including different instructions for vinegar and citric acid, and says to empty and rinse five or six times after the specified procedure. Do not generalize those quantities or methods to another kettle, and do not boil a cleaning solution unless your manual explicitly instructs you to. Water left standing or repeatedly boiled
Water left in a kettle for a long time can taste stale. Empty leftover water after use and start with fresh cold tap water; repeated boiling can also contribute to an unusual taste in hot drinks. Morphy Richards kettle guidance · Water UK household guidance

Water supply, pipes, or other fixtures
If the taste is present in cold tap water, the cause may lie upstream of the kettle. The Drinking Water Inspectorate identifies possible sources including natural organic compounds interacting with chlorine during boiling, plastic pipes in a new house, tap washers, and incorrectly installed washing-machine or dishwasher connections. What to do, based on the comparison
If only kettle-boiled water tastes or smells unusual
- Empty any water that has been standing and refill with fresh cold tap water.
- Check for visible white or chalky scale. If scale is present, descale only as your exact kettle manual permits, using a compatible product and its label directions.
- Rinse as the manual directs before using the kettle again. Avoid abrasive cleaners and do not scrub the heating element.
- If the kettle is new, follow its maker’s first-use directions. Do not assume repeated boiling will always remove the smell.
If cold tap water is affected too
Contact your local water utility for advice, particularly if the change is strong or has appeared for the first time. The regulator’s guidance also describes isolating possible household fixtures and appliance connections; do not alter plumbing connections yourself. If a plastic taste persists after kettle care
Water Corporation of Western Australia suggests trying fresh water and a stainless-steel kettle as a practical test for a plastic taste after boiling. This is one utility’s troubleshooting suggestion, not a guarantee: a stainless-steel kettle may still have plastic or rubber parts that contact water. If comparing replacements, check all water-contact materials, including seals and filters, as well as cleaning access, removable scale filters, capacity, minimum fill, maintenance instructions, and the model’s warranty.
