An AirTag does not send a continuously refreshed GPS location. Find My updates its map when the AirTag is detected through Apple’s Find My network; until another report arrives, the map can show the last place and time the item was located. The timestamp tells you how old that report is—not necessarily where the AirTag is now.
Why an AirTag location can be old
An AirTag relies on nearby Apple devices to help report its approximate location. Bluetooth detection by a device in the Find My network creates an opportunity for a new location report; the AirTag does not independently transmit a live position to your iPhone. If no new network detection is reported, Find My may continue to show the last location it received. Apple describes the update as occurring when the item connects to the Find My network, but does not give a fixed refresh interval.
That means an old timestamp by itself does not prove the AirTag is broken, that its battery is dead, or that a particular setting is wrong. It means Find My has not shown a more recent location report.
What the timestamp and status mean
A location with a time
In Find My, open Items and select the AirTag. The displayed place and time indicate the latest location report available to Find My. Treat the time as the age of that report, not as confirmation of the AirTag’s current position.

“No location found”
Apple says a last known location may remain visible for up to seven days. If more than seven days have passed since the last report from the Find My network, Find My can no longer show that location and displays “No location found.” This is a display limit for the last known location, not a promise that an AirTag will update within seven days. “Not sharing location • Online”
This status means the item is online but cannot send its location, according to Apple. It differs from simply seeing an older location and timestamp: Find My is explicitly reporting that it cannot provide a location for the item. See Apple’s explanation of Find My location states.

What to do when Find My is not updating
- Check the latest report: Open the Find My app, tap Items, select the AirTag, and read the location and timestamp.
- Turn on a found notification: If Find My cannot locate the item, enable Notify When Found on its item screen. Allow Find My notifications so you can receive an alert if the item is located again.
- Interpret the next result: A newer location means Find My received another report. If the old report remains, the map still has no newer location to show; Apple does not specify how long a new report should take.

Why there is no guaranteed refresh time
Find My depends on detection by nearby Apple devices and subsequent reporting to the owner. Whether another report appears depends on a new network detection event; Apple’s guidance does not promise a location update every few minutes or hours, or guarantee detection at a particular place or time. The map should therefore be read as the latest report available, rather than a live tracker.

Does an old location show who has seen the AirTag?
No. An old timestamp only describes the age of the last location report available to you. It does not establish who viewed the item or why the latest report is old. Apple says Find My network accessories use frequently changing Bluetooth identifiers and end-to-end encryption. If you receive an unwanted-tracking alert, follow Apple’s guidance on what to do when an AirTag or other location-tracking device is with you; do not use an AirTag to track people without their consent.
