An AI chatbot can lose track of information for two different reasons: it may not have saved the detail for use in future chats, or the detail may no longer be available in the active conversation context. Check memory and chat-history settings first. For an immediate fix, restate the important facts in a concise handoff; if you build a chatbot, manage its conversation state deliberately. These steps make relevant information easier to use, but they cannot guarantee perfect recall.
Why does an AI chatbot forget what you said?
“Memory” can mean more than one thing. A chatbot may use working context for the current conversation, persistent memory for selected details across chats, or a search feature that retrieves information from past conversations. Those systems have different limits and controls; a chatbot does not necessarily keep a complete, searchable record of everything you have said.
It forgot something from this same conversation
The chatbot may not have the earlier message available in its active context, particularly in a long thread. A context window is working space for a request, not permanent personal memory. It can include input and output—and, for some models, reasoning tokens—so a request that exceeds the available capacity may be truncated. OpenAI explains these mechanics in its API conversation-state documentation.

Even when earlier text remains available, more context does not automatically produce better recall. Anthropic describes a decline in accuracy and recall as context grows, which it calls “context rot,” in its context-window documentation.

It forgot something from a different conversation
That requires some form of cross-chat continuity, such as saved memory or past-chat search. Such features may be selective, disabled, unavailable for an account, or limited by workspace policy. For ChatGPT, OpenAI says saved memories are stored separately from chat history and that memory does not retain every detail from every conversation. See Memory in ChatGPT for its current controls and qualifications.
How to troubleshoot ChatGPT memory
Review the memory controls
- Open Settings > Personalization > Memory.
- Review the memory summary or saved memories, if those controls are available in your account.
- Ask ChatGPT what it remembers about the relevant preference or fact. If it is wrong or missing, correct it directly or add the important durable detail through the available memory controls.
OpenAI notes that memory controls can vary by plan, region, platform, and workspace. Treat saved memory as selective personalization, not a complete archive or a guarantee that every past message will be found.

Check whether you used a Temporary Chat
ChatGPT Temporary Chats do not create or update memories. At the start of a temporary chat, you may be able to choose whether it uses existing memories, custom instructions, or plugins; OpenAI says that choice cannot be changed after the conversation starts. This can explain why information from that chat did not become persistent personalization.

Delete both the memory and its source when needed
Deleting a conversation alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory drawn from it. To remove information, OpenAI says you may need to delete the saved memory and the relevant chat, as well as copies in relevant files or connected sources. Updates and deletions can take time to propagate; OpenAI says it may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. Check the Help Center guidance for the account-specific process.

How to make a chatbot pick up where you left off
For an ongoing thread
Restate the key detail close to the request that depends on it. Be specific about what the chatbot should use, rather than assuming that an earlier mention remains salient. If it gives an incorrect answer, correct the underlying fact explicitly.
When starting a new chat
Before leaving a long discussion, ask for a compact handoff summary and check it for accuracy. Include only the information needed to continue:

- Durable facts or preferences the assistant should use.
- Decisions already made.
- Current constraints, requirements, or unresolved questions.
- The next task you want completed.
Paste that summary into the new conversation and ask the assistant to confirm the key constraints before proceeding. This gives it usable context directly, rather than relying on selective memory or an assumption that it can search every past transcript.

Conversation continuity and context capacity are separate concerns. An application can preserve conversation state while still running into a model’s context limit, and retaining a long transcript does not ensure that every detail will be used effectively.
Best Value
- Budget the full request. Account for input, expected output, and any reasoning tokens that apply to the model. OpenAI warns that requests exceeding the available context can be truncated; limits depend on the model, so avoid treating one model’s documented capacity as universal.
- Keep an authoritative state summary. Store concise, current facts and decisions separately from the raw transcript. Update the summary when the user changes a requirement, and distinguish confirmed facts from assumptions.
- Retrieve selectively. Search or retrieve only records relevant to the current request instead of loading an entire history. Preserve the source of important facts so the system can verify them.
- Compact before limits become a problem. Summarize long exchanges while preserving decisions and open tasks. Anthropic also recommends context curation and documents compaction for conversations approaching limits in its context-window guidance.
For API implementations, OpenAI’s conversation-state documentation also notes that prior input in a previous_response_id chain counts as input tokens. Persisting a chain is not the same as getting unlimited working context.
How memory and past-chat search differ across assistants
When evaluating continuity in an assistant, check what it actually offers in your account rather than assuming every product has one universal memory feature. The useful questions are whether it keeps older turns in the active context, saves selected details across chats, searches prior transcripts on demand, and lets you inspect, edit, delete, disable, or scope stored information. Workspace policy, plan, region, and temporary-chat settings can affect availability.
Anthropic documents Claude chat search using retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), with searches appearing as tool calls, and describes controls for memory and chat search in its Help Center article. OpenAI documents ChatGPT memory and chat-history controls in its Help Center. Google’s Gemini Help page is titled Get personalization with memory of your past Gemini chats; check the page and your account for current availability and controls.
