An AI-built website is not automatically excluded from ChatGPT Search. A page may be unavailable because OpenAI’s search crawler, OAI-SearchBot, is blocked or cannot retrieve usable content; even when it can be crawled, that only makes the page eligible for consideration, not guaranteed to appear or be cited.
How ChatGPT Search discovers websites
OpenAI identifies OAI-SearchBot as the crawler used to surface websites in ChatGPT search results. If your site blocks it, or another access layer prevents it from reading a page, that can interfere with the page’s eligibility for ChatGPT Search summaries and snippets. OpenAI’s publisher FAQ advises site owners to allow OAI-SearchBot for this purpose.
Eligibility is not a placement promise. OpenAI’s public guidance does not promise a way to rank higher or guarantee that a page will be selected or cited.

Do not treat these crawler names as interchangeable. OAI-SearchBot is associated with ChatGPT Search discovery; GPTBot relates to potential use of content for training. Blocking GPTBot does not, by itself, establish that ChatGPT Search cannot discover your site, and allowing OAI-SearchBot is the relevant access check for search visibility.

Why an AI-built site may be hard to find
A crawler rule or site setting blocks access
Check whether your robots.txt file disallows OAI-SearchBot on the site or on the affected page’s path. Website platforms may generate or override crawler rules, so inspect the published file and any platform-level search or bot setting rather than relying on what the editor appears to show.
Robots.txt controls crawler access; it is not a dependable way to remove a URL from search results. Google explains that a blocked URL can still appear in Google Search. For Google, noindex or password protection is the more appropriate route when the goal is to keep content out of results or restrict access. OpenAI notes that its crawler must be able to read a page’s noindex directive for that directive to be seen.

A firewall or access challenge rejects automated requests
A page can be public in your browser and still fail for a crawler. A content delivery network, web application firewall, bot-mitigation service, CAPTCHA, authentication requirement, geographic restriction, or rate limit may block automated requests. OpenAI’s crawler documentation identifies protection layers as common reasons automated fetches fail. Review the relevant security logs and rules for false blocks, especially when the page loads normally for you.
The page depends on JavaScript to reveal its content
An AI website builder may create pages whose important text appears only after client-side scripts run. A complete-looking browser page does not prove that a crawler can retrieve the same content. Google describes its own process as crawling, rendering, and indexing, and warns that not all bots can run JavaScript. That warning is not proof of how every ChatGPT crawler handles every site; it is a reason to verify what a crawler can actually access.
Rank #3
Google recommends server-side rendering or pre-rendering as options that can make content easier for users and crawlers to access. See its JavaScript SEO guidance for details.
The page is difficult to discover or lacks crawlable text
Important pages should have stable URLs and be reachable through ordinary crawlable links. Make the key information available as text, and provide a sitemap. These are sound Google Search fundamentals, not a guarantee of ChatGPT visibility. Google’s SEO guide for web developers covers links, sitemaps, visible text, and Search Console checks.
AI-generated content is not automatically disqualified
Google does not describe AI-generated content itself as an automatic reason for exclusion. Its concern is whether content is useful and created for people: producing many pages without adding user value may violate its scaled content abuse policy. This is Google guidance, not a statement of ChatGPT Search ranking rules.

A practical troubleshooting sequence
- Check crawler access. Open the published
robots.txtfile and confirm it does not disallow OAI-SearchBot from the affected page’s path. Review platform settings that may generate or override the file. - Test whether the page is actually reachable. Confirm it is public and returns usable content. Review firewall, CDN, bot-protection, CAPTCHA, login, geographic, and rate-limit rules, along with their logs, for blocks affecting automated requests.
- Inspect Google’s view separately. In Google Search Console, use URL Inspection to check whether Google can fetch the page and what it renders. Review indexing status, crawl errors, robots.txt rules, and noindex directives. Google also points to the Rich Results Test as a rendering diagnostic in its JavaScript guidance.
- Compare rendered content with what the page needs to communicate. Check that key text is available in the rendered output and that required scripts or resources are not blocked. If essential content appears only after client-side execution, consider server-side rendering or pre-rendering.
- Improve basic discoverability. Link to important pages from other crawlable pages, use stable URLs for individual app content, include a sitemap, and make essential information visible as text. These steps support Google Search discoverability but do not guarantee a ChatGPT result.
- Allow time for crawler-rule changes to take effect. OpenAI says its Search systems may take about 24 hours to adjust after a robots.txt update. This is an approximate adjustment estimate, not a guarantee that a page will appear after that time.
What Google visibility can—and cannot—tell you
Google Search and ChatGPT Search are separate systems. Google’s requirements for AI Overviews and AI Mode relate to Google’s own Search indexing and snippet eligibility, as described in its AI Features and Your Website guidance. A page appearing in Google, or meeting Google’s eligibility rules for an AI feature, does not establish that it will appear in ChatGPT Search.

Likewise, a Google indexing problem is useful evidence that your site may have broader crawlability issues, but it does not prove the cause of a ChatGPT visibility problem. Diagnose each system using the controls and diagnostics it documents.
How to tell whether ChatGPT is sending visitors
If referrals arrive from ChatGPT, OpenAI says their URLs include utm_source=chatgpt.com. Use that parameter to identify ChatGPT referral traffic in your analytics. It can show that a referral occurred; it does not explain why another page was not selected.
