If your 240 Hz monitor is showing 60 Hz, first check the active rate in Settings > System > Display > Advanced display. Select the correct monitor and choose 240 Hz if Windows offers it. If 240 Hz is missing, the computer is not currently exposing that mode through the configured display path; check the resolution, monitor input and settings, cable, ports, adapters or dock, and graphics settings before assuming the monitor is faulty.
Set the refresh rate in Windows
- Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
- In the display selector, choose the 240 Hz monitor. Confirm that the selected display and resolution are the ones you expect.
- Open Choose a refresh rate and select 240 Hz if it is listed. If it is not, choose the highest rate offered while troubleshooting.
- Check Advanced display again to verify the active rate.
Microsoft defines refresh rate as how many times per second the display image refreshes. The Windows instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11. A monitor’s advertised maximum does not guarantee that 240 Hz is available at every resolution or through every connection. Microsoft’s Windows refresh-rate guide explains where to check and change the setting.
If 240 Hz is missing, check the connection path
The available modes depend on the whole signal path: the monitor’s input and resolution, the GPU’s output, the cable, and any dock or adapter in between. Try these checks in order:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems- Disconnect unnecessary docks, dongles, adapters, and other accessories for the test.
- Reseat both ends of the display cable. Try a known-good cable and another supported port if available.
- On a desktop with a separate graphics card, check that the cable is connected to the intended GPU output when that distinction applies to your system.
- If possible, connect the monitor to another computer, or test another display on the original computer. This helps identify whether the issue follows the monitor, computer, or connection path.
Do not assume a generic HDMI or DisplayPort version guarantees 240 Hz. The supported combination varies by exact monitor and GPU models, resolution, input, and other settings. Consult the monitor and graphics-card manuals before buying a cable or changing hardware. Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting guide recommends checking connections, trying another cable or output, disconnecting accessories, and testing another system.

Check the graphics control panel
If your system uses an NVIDIA GPU, open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution. Select the intended display and choose the desired rate from the listed options. This is a second place to confirm which modes the graphics driver exposes; it cannot make an unsupported monitor, input, or connection combination work. See NVIDIA’s instructions for changing resolution and refresh rate.
Check the monitor’s input and on-screen settings
Use the monitor’s on-screen display to confirm that it is set to the input connected to the computer. Review the manual for that exact model for any high-refresh, compatibility, or input-specific settings. Monitor guidance is model-specific: for example, BenQ ZOWIE provides resolution, refresh-rate, and connection recommendations for applicable models in its monitor FAQ. Do not apply a setting from another model unless its manual confirms it is relevant.

If the problem started after a driver or system update
Once you have checked the selected display, resolution, and physical connection, consider whether a recent graphics-driver change affected the available modes. Microsoft includes display-driver rollback or reinstallation among troubleshooting steps for certain display problems; follow the steps that apply to your version of Windows in its external-monitor troubleshooting guide.
NVIDIA documents a narrower issue beginning with Game Ready Driver 560.70: on some monitors, certain resolutions and games may expose only monitor EDID timings when display scaling is set to Display. For that scenario, NVIDIA describes changing scaling to GPU and restarting. This is not a general fix for every monitor limited to 60 Hz; use it only if the conditions match NVIDIA’s documented scaling issue.

Sony’s advice to set a computer to 60 Hz applies to the particular DisplayPort symptoms described in its DisplayPort troubleshooting article. It is not a general solution to a 240 Hz monitor being stuck at 60 Hz.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When Windows is set to 240 Hz but a game still appears limited
Display refresh rate and game frame rate are separate. A 240 Hz setting controls how often the display refreshes; it does not make a game render 240 frames per second. If Windows reports 240 Hz but a particular game seems limited, check that game’s display mode, frame-rate cap, synchronization settings, and in-game status display. The actual frame rate depends on the game, hardware, settings, and any cap.

Use the symptom to choose the next check
- 240 Hz appears in Windows, but 60 Hz is selected: choose 240 Hz for the correct display in Advanced display, then verify the active rate.
- 240 Hz is absent in Windows and the GPU control panel: check the monitor’s input and resolution limits, simplify the connection path, and test another cable or port.
- The option disappeared after an update: review the driver change and use the relevant Microsoft or GPU-vendor guidance if its described conditions fit.
- Only one computer or connection fails: compare another system, port, or cable to see which part of the path the problem follows.
- Windows reports 240 Hz, but one game does not: troubleshoot the game’s output and frame-rate settings separately from Windows.
