A 200Hz monitor can show 60Hz when Windows has selected that rate, the monitor requires a particular input or on-screen setting, or a cable, adapter, dock, GPU port, resolution, or driver is limiting the available modes. Start by checking Windows’ selected display and refresh-rate list; if 200Hz is missing, work through the monitor’s manual and the connection path before changing drivers or buying hardware.

Why a 200Hz monitor may show only 60Hz

The advertised maximum is not necessarily the mode currently selected—or a mode exposed by every combination of monitor, resolution, input, GPU, and intermediary devices. Windows says the refresh rates it lists depend on what the display supports. If 200Hz is absent, the current configuration is not presenting it as a selectable mode; the title alone cannot identify which component or setting is responsible. Microsoft explains how Windows lists refresh rates.

Refresh rate is the number of times the display updates its image each second: 60Hz is 60 updates per second. It is separate from a game’s rendered frame rate. A 200Hz setting does not establish that a game is producing 200 frames per second.

1. Check the selected display and refresh rate in Windows

  1. Open Settings > System > Display > Advanced display.
  2. If multiple displays are connected, choose the 200Hz monitor in the display selector.
  3. Check the current resolution and refresh rate, then open Choose a refresh rate and select 200Hz if it appears.
  4. After changing the rate, confirm the resolution. Windows marks rates that do not support the current resolution with an asterisk; selecting one changes the resolution.

If 200Hz is not listed, do not force an arbitrary custom timing. Continue with the monitor, connection, and GPU checks below. The Windows instructions apply to Windows 10 and Windows 11; Microsoft notes that Windows 10 support ended on October 14, 2025. See Microsoft’s display refresh-rate instructions.

2. Check the monitor’s manual and on-screen display

Search the exact model’s manual for terms such as “maximum refresh rate,” “overclocking,” or “high refresh.” Some monitors require enabling a mode in their on-screen display (OSD), and some support their top mode only through a particular input. The name, steps, and limits vary by model, so do not assume another monitor uses the same procedure.

Example: ASUS ROG Swift PG35V Series

The PG35V Series manual describes a Max Refresh Rate 200 Hz option for DisplayPort input only. It instructs users to activate the OSD control by pressing it twice, then enable the rate in NVIDIA Control Panel after reboot. The manual limits the mode to YUV422 or RGB/YUV444 at 8-bit color depth or below. If the display shows no image after enabling the mode, it says to disconnect the DisplayPort cable and retry with a safer maximum rate through the OSD. These are PG35V-specific instructions, not universal requirements. Consult the ASUS PG35V Series manual.

3. Isolate the cable, ports, and devices in the connection path

A connection path includes more than the cable: a dock, adapter, KVM switch, or converter can also affect which display modes are available. Check the cable at both ends and, where practical, connect the monitor directly to the computer. Then try a known-good cable or another graphics output. Testing the monitor with another system—or another display with this computer—can help narrow down which part of the setup is involved.

Microsoft recommends checking cable security, trying a different cable or system, and trying another video port when troubleshooting an external display. See Microsoft’s external-monitor troubleshooting steps.

Do not assume that every 200Hz monitor needs DisplayPort or that a new cable alone will enable 200Hz. The suitable input and bandwidth depend on the exact monitor and GPU, the resolution and color depth, and any devices between them. Check the monitor’s supported-mode table and the GPU’s output capabilities before choosing a replacement cable.

4. Check the graphics-card control panel

NVIDIA

Open NVIDIA Control Panel > Display > Change resolution, select the monitor, and check the available refresh rates. NVIDIA’s control panel also identifies the connector it detects for the display; bandwidth limits can affect whether some color-depth choices appear. NVIDIA’s Change resolution help.

5. Investigate drivers if the mode disappeared after a change

If 200Hz worked before but disappeared after an update or configuration change, driver troubleshooting is a reasonable next branch—not proof that the driver caused the issue. Microsoft lists resetting the graphics driver with Windows key + Ctrl + Shift + B, restarting the computer, rolling back a driver, or reinstalling it among possible steps. Follow the GPU manufacturer’s current instructions when reinstalling. Microsoft’s external-display troubleshooting page includes these options.

6. Confirm the selected mode—and distinguish it from game FPS

Return to Settings > System > Display > Advanced display and verify the selected monitor, resolution, and current refresh rate. This reports the display’s selected refresh rate; it does not report how many frames a game is rendering. Use the game’s or GPU utility’s frame-rate counter to check game FPS.

What to check before replacing hardware

  • The exact monitor model’s supported resolution-and-refresh combinations and any OSD requirements.
  • The monitor input and GPU output used, including their supported modes.
  • The selected resolution and color depth.
  • Whether a dock, adapter, KVM, or converter is in the signal path.
  • Whether the mode appears when testing another cable, port, or system.

There is no universal best cable or port for every 200Hz monitor. Use the exact monitor manual and GPU documentation to verify compatibility for your setup.
