Repeated exposure can make a familiar smell less noticeable, so your own body odor may register less strongly to you than it does to someone else. That is a plausible explanation—not proof that you have a smell disorder, or that other people necessarily notice an odor. If odor persists, changes, or comes with a sudden increase in sweating, seek medical advice.
Why can’t I smell my own body odor?
The nose and brain adapt to odors encountered repeatedly. A review of human research describes how repeated exposure can reduce both behavioral responses and perceived odor intensity: a 2017 review of habituation and adaptation to odors.
In one long-term experiment, participants were exposed at home to one of two odorants for two weeks. Sensitivity and perceived intensity fell for the odor each participant encountered; for most participants, reduced sensitivity was still evident up to two weeks after exposure ended. The experiment tested those odorants, not participants’ own body odor, so it supports adaptation as a possible explanation rather than directly proving why someone may not notice their own smell. The 1996 study describes the results.

Not noticing your own odor by itself does not establish a smell disorder. If you cannot smell ordinary odors or familiar smells seem distorted, a smell disorder is one possibility; a clinician can evaluate it. What causes body odor?
Body odor often develops when sweat interacts with bacteria and yeasts on the skin. Exercise, heat, hormonal changes, some medicines, and some health conditions can also contribute. Odor alone cannot identify its cause. The NHS guidance on body odor outlines common contributors and self-care.
What can you do to manage odor?
Wash and dry odor-prone areas
Wash your armpits, groin, and feet with soap, then dry them thoroughly. Change and wash clothes regularly. Breathable fabrics and moisture-wicking socks may help manage moisture. If you need a gentler alternative to soap, ask a pharmacist about suitable soap substitutes. These measures are consistent with NHS body odor guidance.

Choose a product for the job
Antiperspirants reduce sweating; deodorants target odor. Some products do both. The American Academy of Dermatology puts the distinction simply: “Antiperspirants help reduce sweating. Deodorants don’t.” Check the product label for its purpose, active ingredients, intended body area, and directions, and use it as directed. Products come in forms such as sticks, roll-ons, and sprays; choose one that suits your skin and routine. Take care with sensitive skin
Avoid fragranced deodorant in the groin, where sensitive skin may become irritated. The AAD also cautions against applying whole-body deodorant indiscriminately. For stronger antiperspirants, sweat shields, foot powder, or a gentler soap substitute, a pharmacist can help you choose an appropriate option. When should you seek medical advice?
Arrange medical advice if odor persists despite self-care, your usual smell changes, sweating suddenly increases, or the issue affects your wellbeing. A new or worsening odor can have varied causes, so evaluation is a better first step than trying to diagnose it yourself. The NIH’s 2018 guidance on smelling sickness recommends medical evaluation for new or worsening body odor; the NHS also advises seeking help when self-care does not resolve the problem.
