Yoko Taro reportedly said he keeps making games partly because he thinks the work may help with dementia prevention—but his remark was a personal motivation, not evidence that game development prevents dementia.
What did Yoko Taro say about making games?
At a public conversation on September 22, 2026, Taro reportedly said he had already done what he wanted to do with the original Drakengard and was not especially eager to keep working. He said he felt he could soon live on savings and a pension, and that he did not want to work anymore.

He nevertheless named “dementia prevention” as one reason he continues to create games. As reported by 4Gamer on October 7, Taro said he had heard stories of people who were strongly oriented around work developing dementia after retirement. He described telling himself that the frustrating parts of game development were good for preventing dementia.

The comments came during The Tenth Mosaic, a game-culture event held at the Institut français de Tokyo on September 22 and 23, 2026. The opening day featured a conversation between Taro, known for Drakengard and NieR, and Keisuke Okabe, associated with Ender Lilies and Ender Magnolia.

- Uncover the truth behind the world of NieR and prepare to question everything in this dark, twisting tale
- Journey alongside an unlikely group of allies through a ruined world, plagued by sickness and monstrous horrors
- A mesmerizing iconic soundtrack, newly recorded by NieR:Automata composer, Keiichi
- Fight back dreadful enemies with a visceral, uniquely customizable blend of swordplay and powerful magic
The exchange was about Taro’s future work and how he feels about continuing game development. His reference to dementia prevention was one explanation for carrying on despite finding the work stressful, not a formal claim about game design or a health recommendation.
Does making games prevent dementia?
The reported comments do not establish that making games prevents dementia. Taro’s reasoning was based on stories he said he had heard about people developing dementia after retiring; the report offers no clinical evidence, data, or comparison showing that continued game development changes dementia risk.
Rank #2
So the accurate takeaway is narrow: Taro reportedly uses the idea of dementia prevention as personal encouragement when work becomes frustrating. That is different from saying that game development—or playing a particular game—has been shown to prevent dementia.

4Gamer’s October 7 report is the contemporaneous account of the panel and quotes Taro’s remarks in Japanese. AUTOMATON WEST published an English-language account dated October 8, rendering one remark as: “Even now, there are lot of frustrating things concerning my work, but when they do happen, I overcome them by telling myself – This is good for preventing dementia.” That is the outlet’s English translation, not an independently verified English transcript, and it appeared after 4Gamer’s report.
