A TV that “won’t turn on” may have no power, be stuck in standby, respond only to its physical button, or show a blinking indicator. Start with the outlet and accessible connections, then compare how the TV responds to its own button, its remote, a reset, and a test with external devices disconnected. These checks can narrow the problem, but a light or symptom alone does not identify a failed internal part.
What does “won’t turn on” look like?
Before troubleshooting, note what happens when you try to start the TV. Different symptoms call for different checks:
- No indicator light: The TV may be off, unplugged, or not receiving power. Light behavior and available power switches vary by model.
- Steady standby light but a blank screen: The TV may be in standby or failing to start fully. Try the TV’s own power button and the model-appropriate reset.
- The TV starts from its cabinet button but not the remote: Focus on the remote and its batteries.
- A blinking indicator: The TV has detected an issue on some models, but the meaning depends on the make, model, color, and blink pattern.
For Sony TVs, the manufacturer says that no indicator lights can simply mean the set is off or unplugged, and that some models have an energy-saving switch that can affect power. Sony also says a blinking red indicator means the TV detected an issue. Check the manual or support page for your exact model rather than applying those interpretations to every brand. Sony’s indicator-light guidance explains the distinctions for its TVs.
Check whether power is reaching the TV
Start with the external power path. These checks do not require opening the TV or handling internal electrical components.

- [Precise Component Matching]: Each electronic component on the board is precisely calibrated to meet the original TV’s power requirements, avoiding compatibility issues or damage to your device.
- Test the wall outlet. Unplug the TV and plug a small appliance into the same outlet. If that appliance also fails, the outlet or its circuit may be the issue.
- Check accessible connections. If the TV has a removable power cord or an external adapter, confirm that the accessible ends are firmly connected. Do not force a connector or attempt to remove a cord that is not designed to detach.
- Bypass the power strip for a test. If the TV is connected through a power strip or surge protector, temporarily plug it directly into a known-working wall outlet. This tests the connection path; it is not a reason to buy a new power strip.
Sony and LG both recommend checking the outlet and power connections when a TV will not turn on. Sony’s no-power steps and LG’s no-power guidance provide manufacturer-specific instructions.
Use the TV’s button to separate a remote problem
Press the power button on the TV itself, then try the supplied remote. The cabinet button’s location varies by model; check the manual if you cannot find it.
- If the cabinet button starts the TV: The set can respond to a local power command, so check the remote next. Confirm the batteries are installed in the correct orientation and replace them with the type specified for that remote. Do not assume all TV remotes use the same battery size.
- If neither method starts it: Continue with the reset and accessory checks below. This result does not, by itself, establish an internal hardware failure.
Sony’s troubleshooting guidance also uses the TV’s own button to distinguish a TV response from a remote-control issue. See Sony’s model-specific troubleshooting steps for its instructions.

Try a model-appropriate power reset
If the outlet and accessible connections appear to work, unplugging the TV briefly may clear a temporary malfunction. The wait time is not universal: Sony specifies at least 30 seconds in its general no-power guidance, while another Sony symptom flow calls for two minutes. Follow the procedure for your TV model and symptom instead of treating either duration as a rule for every set. Sony’s general no-power article and its symptom-oriented instructions illustrate the variation.
Do not start with a factory data reset. It is different from unplugging the TV and can erase personalized settings and account or application data. Sony’s factory-reset instructions apply to certain BRAVIA models, not all TVs.
Test the TV without connected devices
An attached device can complicate troubleshooting, so test the television by itself:

- It is imperative to purchase by PART number ONLY. The listed TV model number is a reference only and should not be used to make a purchase decision. The reason is that there can be several different parts that go into the same TV model. These different parts are NOT interchangeable.
- If you are not sure how to check and match your PART number (NOT TV model number), please contact us first so that we can help you save time and money.
- Turn off the TV and disconnect external devices, including HDMI-connected equipment and USB devices.
- Try to start the TV with its own button or remote.
- If it starts, reconnect one device at a time and retest. The device or connection that coincides with the symptom may help isolate the trigger.
This is a diagnostic test, not proof that external devices are a common cause of power failure. Sony includes disconnecting connected devices among its symptom troubleshooting steps: Sony’s TV troubleshooting guidance.

Contact the TV manufacturer or a qualified repair service if the outlet works, accessible connections are secure, the TV does not respond to its own button, and the reset and disconnected-device tests do not resolve the issue. When you ask for help, report:
- Whether the outlet powered another device and whether a direct-wall test changed anything.
- Whether the TV responded to its cabinet button or only to the remote.
- Whether its indicator was off, steady, or blinking, including the color and blink pattern.
- Whether it started with HDMI, USB, and other external devices disconnected.
- Whether the model-appropriate unplug reset changed the symptom.
These observations can help support narrow the next step, but they do not establish that a particular internal part has failed. Do not open the TV or attempt internal electrical repairs. Sony and LG advise seeking support when basic checks do not fix a no-power problem. Sony’s guidance and LG’s guidance describe when to escalate.
