First identify what kind of remote you have. A simple Roku remote uses infrared (IR) and must point at the Roku device with a clear line of sight. A voice remote uses a different connection path and may need to be paired. If the remote still navigates Roku menus but cannot change your TV’s power or volume, troubleshoot TV control—not Roku pairing.
Identify the connection problem
Check the buttons on the remote and what still works:
- No voice or magnifying-glass button: Roku describes this as a simple remote that uses IR. It needs to point at the Roku device, with nothing blocking the path.
- Microphone or magnifying-glass button: This is a voice remote. It may use a wireless connection, so it does not need to point at the Roku device. If it cannot navigate Roku, check its power and pairing.
- Roku menus work, but TV power or volume does not: The remote is communicating with Roku. Set up or troubleshoot TV control instead of repeatedly pairing the remote.
Try these fixes when the remote cannot navigate Roku
1. Check the remote’s power
For a remote with replaceable batteries, remove both batteries, press any two buttons, then reinstall the batteries. If it remains unresponsive, try fresh batteries of the correct type.
For a rechargeable remote, charge it before trying to pair again. Roku’s UK troubleshooting guidance also describes a reset procedure for rechargeable models: hold the pairing button for 20 seconds, or, on models without one, hold Back and Home for 20 seconds. Remote designs and procedures can vary, so use this only if it applies to your model.

The remote and Roku device need to be in pairing mode at the same time. Use the sequence that matches your remote:
- Remote with a pairing button: Hold the button for five seconds, until the status light flashes.
- Remote without a pairing button: Hold Back and Home together for five seconds, until the status light flashes.
Roku’s guidance is: “If pairing fails, make sure both the streaming device and remote are in pairing mode simultaneously.” If you have another working remote or can use the Roku mobile app, you can also start setup from Settings > Remotes & devices > Add devices > Remote > Continue.

4. Check distance, obstacles, and interference
For a simple IR remote, point it at the Roku device and clear anything blocking the path. For a voice remote that pairs wirelessly, move it closer to the Roku and check whether nearby electronics or obstacles are interfering.
If you use a Streaming Stick, check that the wireless receiver built into its USB power cable is connected. Roku also says a free HDMI extender can help reduce interference.

Use your phone as a temporary remote
The Roku mobile app can control a Roku device when its remote is unavailable. The phone and Roku must be connected to the same Wi-Fi network, and mobile-app control may need to be enabled in Roku settings. If you cannot navigate Roku to check that setting, the app may not be usable as a fallback until control is enabled.
If Roku navigation works but TV power or volume does not
Redo the TV-control setup for the remote. Roku’s TV-control options include infrared and HDMI-CEC, and a TV may not support every control. If the Roku player is connected through a soundbar or receiver, temporarily connect it directly to the TV while setting up TV control. This helps separate a TV-control setup issue from a problem pairing the remote to Roku.

When to replace the remote
Consider a replacement only after checking power, restarting Roku, and trying the pairing steps that apply to your remote. Compatibility depends on the exact Roku device: Roku says voice remotes are supported on devices shipped since 2017 and certain older models. Check your device model against Roku’s compatibility information before choosing a replacement; do not assume every Roku remote works with every Roku player or TV.
