If your Razer BlackWidow has gone dark, first check its lighting settings in Razer Synapse and connect it directly to your computer. Then update the relevant software and test whether Synapse is involved. Only try a hard reset after confirming Razer lists your exact model as compatible: the reset clears onboard profiles and lighting configurations.
Before you troubleshoot, identify what changed
BlackWidow models do not all use identical controls or reset procedures. Note the exact model name, whether it is wired or wireless, and whether the keys still type. Check whether every key is dark or only some keys, and whether the problem began after a settings change, software update, or connection change. These details help you follow the instructions for your keyboard rather than applying a shortcut meant for another generation.
Check Synapse lighting settings
Razer says Chroma lighting on supported keyboards is configured through compatible Razer Synapse software. Open Synapse and check that lighting is enabled, the selected effect is visible, and brightness is not set so low that the keyboard appears dark. Controls can vary by model; consult the relevant BlackWidow model support page or Chroma V2 support page for model-specific guidance.

- Disconnect the keyboard from any USB hub, extender, or KVM switch, then connect it directly to the computer.
- If the keyboard is wired, try another USB port. Razer recommends a rear-panel port on a desktop computer when available.
- If your model has two USB connectors, connect both as directed in that model’s instructions. Do not assume one connection is sufficient for every model.
- If practical, test another direct port or computer to see whether the lighting problem follows the keyboard.
Razer’s general BlackWidow support and FAQs and its keyboard troubleshooting guidance recommend checking the connection and trying another port.

Update software, then isolate Synapse
- Install a firmware update only if Razer provides one for your exact model, and follow that updater’s instructions.
- Update Razer Synapse and your computer’s operating system.
- As a diagnostic test, disable or close Synapse and check whether the keyboard’s lighting behaves differently. If it works with Synapse disabled, Razer recommends a clean Synapse reinstall. This result points to a possible software interaction; it does not by itself prove Synapse is the cause.

Use a hard reset only for a listed model
Razer documents a hard-reset procedure for a limited set of keyboards, not every BlackWidow. Check the applicable-model list in Razer’s hard-reset instructions before proceeding. Razer says the reset can help when lighting behaves unexpectedly, but it clears onboard profiles and lighting configurations.

For a model Razer lists as compatible, the documented sequence is:
- Close Synapse and other peripheral software.
- Disconnect the keyboard from the computer.
- Hold Left Ctrl + Esc while reconnecting the keyboard.
- Keep holding the keys for about five seconds, then release them.
Afterward, reconfigure lighting and profiles in Synapse. Do not try this sequence if your exact model is not listed.

When to contact Razer Support
If the lighting remains off after the applicable checks, contact Razer Support with your exact model and the steps you tried. A persistent problem alone does not establish that the keyboard has a hardware fault; support can help determine the appropriate next step.
