If the resolution you want is missing or unavailable, the cause is usually somewhere in the display setup: the wrong screen is selected, a display mode or hardware limit applies, the connection path cannot carry the requested mode, or a device policy restricts changes. Check the affected monitor in your operating system’s display settings first, then work through the connection and capability checks below. The exact cause depends on your computer, monitor, and connection.
Start with the display you want to change
On a computer with more than one screen, display settings apply to the selected display. Confirm that the external monitor—not the laptop’s built-in screen or another connected display—is selected before changing its resolution. If the monitor does not appear in the settings at all, troubleshoot detection and the physical connection before looking for a resolution option.
Also distinguish resolution from scaling. Resolution controls the display mode sent to the monitor; scaling or text-size controls change how large interface elements appear. A larger-looking desktop does not necessarily mean the signal resolution changed. On Chromebooks, Google lists display and text size separately from the external monitor’s Resolution control (Google Chromebook Help).
Check the operating system’s resolution controls
Windows
Open Settings > System > Display, select the affected display, and inspect the Display resolution options. The available choices depend on the display and computer; the general instructions are documented by Microsoft Support. If the desired mode is not listed, do not assume a particular driver or Windows version is responsible without checking the hardware and connection.

macOS
Open Apple menu > System Settings > Displays. Choose Default to use the display’s recommended resolution, or select another available option. Apple says Show all resolutions reveals additional choices, including low-resolution modes, but available options vary by display and Mac model (Apple Support: Change your Mac display’s resolution).
Resolution is not the only setting that can make a display unusable. A refresh rate that is too high can leave the screen black. Use modes supported by the display and Mac rather than forcing an arbitrary resolution-and-refresh-rate combination; consult the display documentation if you are unsure which combinations are supported.

ChromeOS
Open Settings > Device > Displays, select the external monitor by name, then use Resolution. This control is separate from display and text size. Google’s instructions also note that the USB-C cable must be fast enough to support the display connection (Google Chromebook Help).

Check mirroring, extension, and detection
If you use multiple displays, check whether the computer is mirroring the same image or extending the desktop, and confirm which display is selected. Systems offer different controls and choices for these arrangements; changing from mirroring to extending may help you identify whether you were adjusting the intended screen, but it does not guarantee that a higher resolution will become available. The monitor and computer still need to support the mode.

If the monitor is missing from the display settings, check that it is powered on, set to the correct input, and connected securely. Apple says a properly powered and connected display should be detected automatically by a Mac. If it is not detected, or cannot use its highest resolutions or refresh rates, follow Apple’s connection troubleshooting guidance (Apple Support: If your external display is dark or low resolution).
Verify that the requested mode and connection are supported
A resolution choice can be absent because the requested resolution, refresh rate, or combination of the two is beyond what the computer, monitor, or connection path supports. Check the specifications for both the computer’s display output and the monitor’s input, including the supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations. If the monitor’s recommended or native mode is listed, it is a sensible starting point.

Then consider every component between the computer and monitor: the output port, cable, adapter, and dock or hub. Each must support the desired connection. A USB-C plug alone does not establish that a cable supports a particular display mode. Apple notes that a cable requiring a port absent from a Mac may require an adapter or a different cable, and that external-display capability depends on the Mac model, resolution, and refresh rate (Apple Support).

If your hardware permits, test a direct connection between the computer and monitor rather than through a dock or adapter. This is a diagnostic check, not proof that a cable or dock is faulty. Before buying anything, verify the exact ports and capabilities of the computer and display; a compatible cable or adapter is useful only if the existing connection is the limiting factor.

Find which part of the setup is limiting the choice

Check for a managed-device restriction
On managed ChromeOS devices, an administrator can prevent users from changing predefined display settings. Google documents that unsupported custom external resolutions revert to the display’s native resolution. If the controls are locked or your selection reverts, ask your administrator whether a display policy applies (Google Chrome Enterprise and Education Help).
