An M18 battery does not provide USB or household AC output on its own. It needs a power source made for the M18 battery interface and for the output you need. First check the adapter or inverter’s exact model and compatibility: a battery that fits physically is not proof that an accessory is compatible.
Why an M18 battery may not power a USB adapter or inverter
The battery platform and the output accessory are separate parts of the system. Milwaukee says M18 batteries are compatible with M18 tools and chargers; that does not establish that every third-party USB adapter or inverter will work. Confirm the accessory is specified for the M18 battery family and the output you want before troubleshooting. Milwaukee’s battery and charger information explains the M18 family, while its 2847-20 TOP-OFF page specifically lists compatibility with all M18 batteries.

These are manufacturer-published specifications, not independent test results. A USB power source and an AC inverter serve different needs; choose based on the device’s required input rather than the word “adapter.”

Troubleshoot a Milwaukee M18 USB adapter that is not working
Milwaukee’s troubleshooting document for the 2847-20 identifies a drained battery, a device exceeding the accessory’s rating, excessive heat, and cable or adapter problems as possible causes. Those possibilities do not identify the cause for every accessory or every failure; check the manual for your exact model.

- Identify the equipment. Record the battery, accessory, and device model numbers. Check the accessory label and manual for the supported battery platform, available ports, and output limits. Do not treat a physical fit as proof of compatibility.
- Check the battery charge. Inspect the M18 fuel gauge and try a properly charged pack. Milwaukee says the gauge indicates the battery’s state of charge; refer to its battery manual guidance for operating, charging, and storage practices.
- Match the port to the device. On the 2847-20, check that the device’s power demand is within the selected port’s rating. Milwaukee’s troubleshooting guide directs users to try the 100 W port when a device exceeds a rating; follow the accessory and device manuals for their exact limits.
- Check heat, cables, and connections. If the unit is hot, let it cool before retrying. Check for damaged cables and poor connections, and use a known-good compatible cable or adapter when the manual permits.
- Reset the TOP-OFF USB-C ports if needed. Milwaukee’s instruction for the 2847-20 is: “To reset the USB-C ports, remove the battery and the cable for 5 seconds and try again.” Reconnect them and retry.
- Contact support if it still fails. Consult the exact accessory manual and contact Milwaukee support with the catalog or model number and serial number. Milwaukee’s support site provides manuals and service options.
When the problem may be the accessory rather than the battery
If the battery gauge indicates charge but a compatible accessory produces no output, the issue could be the accessory, selected port, cable, connection, or device demand—not necessarily a defective battery. The exact cause cannot be determined without the model numbers, device and port in use, charge state, and observed lights or behavior. Do not open the battery pack, bridge contacts, or improvise wiring; compatibility and safe connections for unspecified third-party adapters are not established here.
