If your LG Smart TV shows no connection, or reports that it is connected to Wi-Fi but has no internet, the fault usually sits in one of four places: the TV itself, your home Wi-Fi or router, DNS, or your internet service provider (ISP). You can tell these apart with a short sequence of tests, and most of them take a few minutes and require no changes to the TV.

Start with a two-device test

Before touching the TV’s settings, check whether anything else on the same network can get online. This single test separates a household-wide outage from a problem that affects only the TV.

  1. On your phone or laptop, connect to the same Wi-Fi network the LG TV uses and load a web page.
  2. If the phone or laptop also fails, the problem is almost certainly the router or the ISP. Restart the modem and the router, wait until all status lights settle, and test again.
  3. If other devices still fail after the restart, contact your ISP. Your TV is not the cause, and changing its settings will not help.
  4. If other devices work and only the TV fails, move on to the hotspot test below.

Use a phone hotspot to isolate the TV

LG’s US troubleshooting guide recommends connecting the TV to a phone hotspot. Turn on the hotspot on a phone, connect the TV to that hotspot’s network name, and check whether the TV’s apps work. The result points in one direction or the other.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Result on the hotspot What LG’s guidance indicates Next step
TV connects and apps work The TV is working properly; the home router or ISP is the likely problem Return to the home network and check the router, then your ISP
TV connects but TV apps or network functions still fail The TV may need inspection Contact LG support

Two caveats apply. Hotspot behavior depends on your phone and carrier, so a result on one phone is not proof about every hotspot. Streaming on mobile data also uses your plan’s data allowance, so keep the test short.

Reconnect the TV to Wi-Fi

If the test points to the home network, or you want to rule out a simple configuration error, reconnect the TV carefully.

  1. Confirm the exact Wi-Fi network name (SSID) that your router broadcasts. Similar names, such as a 2.4 GHz and a 5 GHz network, can look almost identical.
  2. Enter the password with the correct capitalization. Wi-Fi passwords are case-sensitive, and a single wrong character produces a failed connection that looks like a hardware fault.
  3. Open the Wi-Fi connection menu for your TV’s model year, using the path in the table below.

Menu routes depend on the webOS generation. LG’s US guide lists the following Wi-Fi paths, and notes that the interface may differ and that newer software can change routes.

Model year (webOS generation) Wi-Fi connection path listed by LG
2021 and later (webOS 6.0 or later) Settings → All Settings → General → Network → Internet Connection → Wi-Fi Connection
2020 (webOS 5.0) Settings → All Settings → Connection → Network Connection Settings → Wi-Fi Connection
2019 and earlier (webOS 4.5, as LG lists it) Settings → All Settings → Connection → Wi-Fi Connection
2018 and earlier (before webOS 4.0) Settings → All Settings → Network → Wi-Fi Connection

LG’s published descriptions overlap between years, so if your menu does not match the path for your year, check the support page for your exact model rather than guessing.

Read the network status to find the broken link

LG’s network status view checks the connection in sequence: TV, gateway, DNS, and internet. The point where the check fails tells you which link to examine.

  • Built-in Stereo Speakers: Equipped with dual 5W stereo speakers delivering clear audio and includes wall mounting capability for flexible installation options
  • Not connected: the TV has no active Wi-Fi or cable link. Start with the Wi-Fi name, password and range checks.
  • Connected, but no internet: the TV has a Wi-Fi or cable link, but the router is not providing internet access. LG Spain’s status guide lists three possible causes: DNS delivered by the router, a temporary DSL or fiber line outage, or a router error. Restart the router and test another device. If the problem continues, contact your ISP.
  • Failure at the DNS step: the TV reaches the router but cannot resolve web addresses. Consider the DNS section below, but first restart the router, because router-provided DNS is one of the listed causes.

LG USA’s guidance follows the same logic. It recommends checking the router cabling, restarting or resetting the modem and Wi-Fi router, and then restarting the TV and reconfiguring its network settings if the problem remains.

Fix range, interference and router settings

Weak or unstable Wi-Fi often causes an intermittent connection that looks like a complete failure. Work through these factors in order.

Distance, walls and obstacles

LG USA lists distance, walls and other obstacles as common causes of poor connections. Moving the router closer to the TV, or moving the TV closer to the router, is the most reliable first fix when that is practical.

Wi-Fi extenders

LG USA says a Wi-Fi extender may improve range, but it can also cause slower speeds or unstable service depending on the environment. Treat an extender as a conditional option. Placement changes or a wired Ethernet connection are more dependable.

2.4 GHz versus 5 GHz

LG’s webOS network setup guidance notes that the 2.4 GHz band can suffer interference from other devices that share that frequency, such as microwave ovens and nearby networks, while interference is less likely on 5 GHz. If your router broadcasts both bands, try the 5 GHz network for the TV when it is within range. Wireless conditions and incorrect access-point or security settings can also affect performance.

Channel width and channel congestion

LG Spain’s regional guide recommends checking signal strength and channel congestion, and it discusses 2.4 GHz channel-width settings. These are recommendations from that regional guide, not a universal router setting. Models and routers differ, so consult your ISP or router documentation before you change advanced router settings.

Use a wired Ethernet connection

A wired connection removes Wi-Fi range and interference from the equation. LG’s network setup guidance says that the TV supports wired networking and specifies a Cat5 or higher cable with an RJ45 connector.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Connect one end of the Cat5 or higher Ethernet cable to the TV’s LAN port and the other end to a router that has internet access.
  2. Open the TV’s Network settings and enable wired networking.
  3. Check the status view. If the TV reaches the internet over the cable, the fault was in the wireless link, and you can focus on Wi-Fi placement or the router’s wireless settings.

If the wired connection also fails, the problem lies beyond the Wi-Fi link. Check the router and ISP, not the TV’s wireless settings.

Change DNS as an advanced step

LG provides instructions for editing DNS manually, with steps that differ by webOS generation. LG lists 1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1 as examples of public DNS servers. Use this option only after the basic checks pass and the status view shows a DNS failure. A DNS change is not a guaranteed fix, and it is not a required setting. It affects only the TV, not the rest of your network.

When only one app fails

If the TV connects and other network functions work, but a single app will not load, LG says the problem is most likely with that app. Check for an app update, then contact the app’s provider. Reinstalling the app is the next step if the update does not help.

When to contact LG, and when to reset the TV

Contact LG support in two situations: when no Wi-Fi networks appear on the TV, or when the Wi-Fi menu is disabled, and when the hotspot test shows that TV apps still fail. LG says these symptoms may need service.

A factory reset is the last step, not the first. It removes account settings and installed apps, so you will need to sign in again and reinstall apps afterwards. Use it only after the router, ISP, wired and DNS checks have been completed and the fault still appears to be inside the TV.
