The MSI PS321QR has a 2560 × 1440 panel, not a 4K panel. Windows showing or offering 3840 × 2160 does not change the monitor’s physical resolution: MSI’s manual also lists 4K input timing presets for the PS321QR, meaning it can accept certain 4K signals. To tell whether your setup is simply reporting an available mode or is actually outputting an unexpected signal, compare Windows’ desktop and active signal resolutions and check the monitor’s on-screen display (OSD).
What resolution is the MSI PS321QR?
MSI specifies the PS321QR as a 32-inch WQHD monitor with a native panel resolution of 2560 × 1440. MSI lists refresh-rate limits of up to 165 Hz over DisplayPort, up to 144 Hz over HDMI, and up to 165 Hz over USB-C on its product specification page. The limit available to you can depend on the connection and the rest of your system.
Be careful not to confuse it with the similar model name PS321URV. In MSI’s manual, PS321QR is identified as model 3DA8 with a 2560 × 1440 resolution, while PS321URV is model 3DA9 with a 3840 × 2160 resolution at 60 Hz.

Why can Windows show a 4K mode?
A monitor’s panel resolution and the input timings it can accept are not necessarily the same thing. MSI’s manual includes 3840 × 2160 presets in the PS321QR’s supported display modes. That establishes that the monitor can accept certain 4K timings; it does not make the panel a 4K panel or show how your particular PC is currently sending video.

Windows and graphics drivers use information the monitor reports about its identity and supported display modes. Microsoft explains that this information is carried in EDID, or Extended Display Identification Data, and consumed by Windows components and display drivers. As Microsoft puts it, “Incorrect or invalid EDID information on the monitor’s EEPROM can lead to problems such as setting incorrect display modes.” That makes an EDID problem possible in general, but a 4K option alone does not prove your monitor’s EDID is wrong or that the unit is faulty. See Microsoft’s EDID override documentation.
Check what your PC is actually outputting
Start by distinguishing the resolution Windows uses for the desktop from the signal sent over the cable. In Windows, open Settings > System > Display, select the PS321QR if more than one display is connected, and inspect the resolution settings. Open Advanced display for that display to compare the desktop mode with the active signal mode. The exact labels may vary by Windows version and graphics driver.

- Desktop resolution describes the resolution Windows uses to render the desktop.
- Active signal resolution describes the mode being sent to the display. If it says 3840 × 2160, the PC is sending a 4K-timed signal; that still does not mean the panel has 4K pixels.
- Monitor OSD menus commonly show the incoming signal’s resolution and refresh rate. Check the information screen for the selected input and compare it with Windows.
If Windows shows a 2560 × 1440 desktop but a 3840 × 2160 active signal, the two entries describe different parts of the display pipeline. If both show 3840 × 2160, check the Windows resolution selection and the graphics driver’s display settings, then see whether the OSD agrees about the incoming mode. These checks identify what is being reported; they do not, by themselves, establish that the monitor is scaling or displaying the image correctly.

- Verify the exact model. Check the label on the monitor or its OSD. Confirm it is PS321QR, not PS321URV, since MSI specifies different native resolutions for those models.
- Check the selected input and connection path. Note whether you are using DisplayPort, HDMI, or USB-C, and whether a dock, adapter, or other device sits between the PC and monitor. Without the PC, GPU, driver, cable path, and current signal details, there is no evidence-based reason to blame a particular cable or adapter.
- Set a supported mode in Windows or the graphics utility. For the PS321QR, MSI’s product specifications list up to 2560 × 1440 at 165 Hz over DisplayPort, 2560 × 1440 at 144 Hz over HDMI, and 2560 × 1440 at 165 Hz over USB-C. Choose a refresh rate appropriate to the connection and system; those are MSI’s stated maximums, not a guarantee that every computer or connection path will offer them.
- Use MSI’s preset display modes if the picture is incorrectly sized or centered. The manual recommends using the preset modes for those image-position or sizing problems. If you see flickering or waves, MSI advises matching the refresh rate to the monitor’s capability.
- Escalate only with the observed details. If the OSD, Windows active signal, and desktop resolution disagree in a way that leaves the image unusable, record each value along with the input and connection path before contacting MSI support or your PC/GPU maker. The available information does not identify a particular firmware, driver, or hardware fix for your configuration.
When an EDID override is relevant
Microsoft documents a way for a vendor to distribute an INF override that substitutes corrected EDID information for corresponding information stored in the monitor’s EEPROM. That is not a general-purpose first fix for a 4K option appearing in Windows. The evidence here does not establish that your PS321QR has invalid EDID, and an override should not be installed unless the monitor or PC vendor provides one for the exact model and issue.
