If Windows keeps reverting your preferred calendar or date format, first identify which setting is changing: regional format, country or region, display language, or a calendar option inside one app. They are separate settings, and the cause can depend on whether the change affects one app, one user, or the whole device.
Which setting is actually resetting?
Windows separates several preferences that can look related:
- Regional format: Controls date and time conventions used by Windows and apps. This is usually the setting to check when dates appear in an unexpected order or style.
- Country or region: Identifies the region associated with Windows. It is distinct from the format used to display dates.
- Display language: Changes the language used in Windows menus and other interface elements; it is not, by itself, the fix for a date-format problem.
- App-specific calendar or format: An app may offer its own calendar preference or format behavior, so its display may not match Windows exactly.

Work out where and when the value changes
Before changing anything, note the setting’s value, then check it again after the event that triggers the reset. Compare Windows with the affected app and, if available, another app that displays dates.

- If only one app changes, inspect that app’s calendar, language, or regional preferences and its behavior when following Windows settings.
- If multiple apps and Windows show the wrong date conventions, check Windows regional format.
- If the value changes after sign-in, restart, or a user switch, record which event precedes it. That pattern helps an administrator distinguish a user preference from account or device configuration.
- If the issue occurs only for new accounts or the sign-in screen, the setting may involve system or new-user defaults rather than the current user’s preference.
Do not infer a specific cause from the symptom alone. Microsoft documents that some international settings, including user locale, can be reset dynamically based on user preferences. That makes user-preference behavior one possibility to investigate; it does not establish cloud sync, a Windows update, or profile corruption as the cause on a particular PC. Check for work or school device management
On a work- or school-managed PC, ask IT whether a policy limits locale selection or overrides user choices. Microsoft documents policies that can restrict a user’s ability to select or override a locale: International policy settings. Do not try to bypass organizational management; the administrator can confirm whether the setting is intentional and what changes are permitted.

If several users are affected, or the problem appears on the welcome screen or for newly created accounts, tell IT the exact scope. A user’s regional format and the system or new-user defaults are not necessarily the same setting.
Change settings at the right scope
For an ordinary one-user date-format issue, start with that user’s Windows regional format and the affected app’s preferences. Administrative tools are more relevant when you need to change international settings across a running Windows installation or copy a user’s settings to system and new-user accounts.

For a current Windows installation
Microsoft recommends the International PowerShell cmdlets for changing international settings on a running Windows installation. Use them only when the settings need to be managed through PowerShell, and confirm the intended scope before applying a change: International PowerShell module.
For the welcome screen or new accounts
On Windows 11, an administrator can use Copy-UserInternationalSettingsToSystem to copy selected international settings from the current user to welcome-screen/system accounts and/or new-user accounts. It requires administrator rights, changes system-level settings, and takes effect after a restart. It is not a general remedy for a setting that keeps changing only in one user’s session. Consult Microsoft’s cmdlet documentation before using it.

What to tell support or IT
A concise record makes the problem easier to diagnose. Include:
- The exact setting that changes and its value before and after.
- Whether Windows, one app, or multiple apps show the changed format.
- Whether it happens after sign-in, restart, switching users, or creating an account.
- Whether the PC is managed by work or school.
Those details help separate a per-app preference from a user locale change, an account-default issue, or a policy restriction without assuming one cause applies to every reset.
