A weight-loss stall often means your calorie deficit has become smaller as your body has changed—not that you have permanently “broken” your metabolism. Your body needs fewer calories at a lower weight, and biological adaptations can also affect appetite and energy use. Review the longer-term trend, revisit whether your plan still fits, and avoid responding with an extreme cut. A plateau alone cannot identify its cause.
Why weight loss can slow or stall
Your smaller body needs less energy
As you lose weight, your body requires fewer calories than it did at a higher weight. The intake that once created a clear deficit may therefore create a smaller one over time. NIDDK explains this change in its guidance on eating and physical activity, last reviewed in May 2023. Slower progress does not mean further weight loss is impossible.
Appetite and energy expenditure can adapt
In the weight-reduced state, physiological adaptations may reduce energy expenditure and increase energy intake, making it harder to maintain the same progress. NIDDK discussed these mechanisms in a 2019 workshop overview, The Physiology of the Weight Reduced State. The overview explains mechanisms; it is not a treatment guideline.
A separate NIDDK research update reported an estimated increase of about 50 calories per day in intake for each pound lost among participants taking canagliflozin, a drug studied in people with type 2 diabetes. Their weight loss slowed after about six months. This is a study-specific finding from a drug trial, not a prediction for people following a calorie-restricted diet generally. See the 2017 NIDDK research update.

A flat scale does not reveal the cause
Eating patterns, activity, sleep, medicines, health conditions, genes, and environment can all affect weight. A scale trend by itself cannot tell you which factor is involved. NIDDK outlines these influences in Factors Affecting Weight & Health.
What to do when progress slows
1. Check the trend, not one weigh-in
Weigh regularly and keep a record so you can distinguish a lasting change in trend from a single reading. NIDDK notes that online trackers and smartphone apps can help record food, activity, and weight. A basic home scale is optional; it can help monitor weight but cannot identify the cause of a stall or directly measure fat loss. See NIDDK’s weight-monitoring guidance.

2. Reassess whether the plan still fits
Because calorie needs fall with weight, review whether your current eating plan remains appropriate and sustainable. Do not make a sharp calorie cut based only on a stalled scale: what is suitable depends on your health, body size, current intake, and clinical circumstances. NIDDK recommends choosing a healthy eating approach that you can sustain over time in its eating and activity guidance.
3. Set activity goals that match your health and ability
For healthy adults, U.S. guidance cited by NIDDK calls for at least 150 minutes per week of moderate-intensity aerobic activity and muscle-strengthening activity on two or more days each week. NIDDK also cites 300 minutes per week of moderate-intensity activity as a target to help prevent weight regain after weight loss; that is a maintenance goal in that context, not a universal prescription for a plateau. The figures come from guidance referencing the 2018 Physical Activity Guidelines for Americans. If you have a condition such as heart disease, high blood pressure, or diabetes, ask a clinician what activity is safe before starting a regular program. Details are in NIDDK’s activity guidance.

4. Review other possible influences with a clinician
A health professional can help review medicines, health conditions, eating and activity habits, and other factors that may be relevant. Do not stop or change a prescribed medicine on your own. NIDDK discusses weight-related influences in Factors Affecting Weight & Health and the role of professional support in Choosing a Safe & Successful Weight-loss Program.
5. Consider structured support
A useful program combines reduced-calorie eating guidance, activity suited to health and ability, behavior-change support, progress monitoring, and a plan for maintaining weight. Look for trained professionals, regular feedback, and advice adapted to health, preferences, culture, and values. NIDDK says experts recommend an initial goal of losing 5% to 10% of starting weight within six months when selecting a successful program; this is a program-planning benchmark, not a required rate for every person. Its program-selection guidance also warns against unrealistic promises.

Tools and medical options
Personalized planning
NIDDK’s Body Weight Planner can help adults make personalized calorie and activity plans for reaching a goal and maintaining it afterward. The page, last reviewed in May 2017, says the tool is for adults 18 or older and not for people who are pregnant or breastfeeding or for younger people. It is a planning aid, not individualized medical advice.
Medication or surgery requires clinical assessment
Weight-loss medicines and surgery may be appropriate treatments in some cases, alongside lifestyle changes and professional assessment. They are not do-it-yourself fixes for a stalled scale. NIDDK describes treatment options in its Treatment for Overweight & Obesity guidance, last reviewed in May 2023.
