The reason for the reported downgrade is unknown. In a first-person account published October 2, 2026, Ben Schlappig says Tunisair changed his separately booked Tunis–Marseille reservation from business class to economy, but the notice did not explain why. An Airbus A320 cabin-layout change is one possibility raised in the account—not a confirmed cause.
What happened on the Tunis–Marseille booking?
Schlappig says he booked the Tunis (TUN)–Marseille (MRS) flight separately from his Air Algerie itinerary and paid for business class. He says the flight was listed as operated by an Airbus A320, and a notice in French showed his reservation in economy instead. The email described changes to the reservation without plainly identifying a downgrade or explaining the reason, according to his account at One Mile at a Time.
He also reports that business-class inventory appeared available when he booked and later showed no availability. That is his observation of booking inventory; it does not establish how many seats were occupied or why the cabin assignment changed. The report does not include a Tunisair response.
Why might Tunisair have changed the cabin?
The report does not establish a cause. It raises aircraft configuration as a question: some A320s may have a dedicated business cabin, while others may use a configuration in which business class is created by blocking middle seats. But “Airbus A320” identifies an aircraft family, not the particular cabin layout assigned to this flight. The report does not confirm an aircraft swap, an all-economy configuration, a wet lease, or any other explanation.

To get a case-specific answer, ask Tunisair to identify the operating carrier, the aircraft registration and cabin configuration planned for the flight, and the reason the booking was changed. If the flight has already taken place, ask which aircraft operated it and whether the cabin assignment changed again at the airport.
Does EU261 require a downgrade refund for this flight?
Regulation (EC) No 261/2004 applies to flights departing from an EU airport. For flights arriving in the EU from outside it, the regulation applies only when the operating carrier is an EU carrier. The reported flight departs Tunis, outside the EU, and the account identifies Tunisair as the carrier. On those reported facts, the route does not appear to meet EU261’s scope condition. Verify the actual operating carrier and itinerary before reaching a conclusion about a particular claim. The scope rules are in Article 3 of the regulation; the European Commission also summarizes them in its passenger-rights overview.

Where Article 10 does apply, an operating carrier that places a passenger in a lower class must reimburse part of the ticket price within seven days. The percentages are based on flight distance:

These are the downgrade reimbursements set out in Article 10 of Regulation (EC) No 261/2004. They are not a universal payment for every international downgrade, nor a separate fixed cash award. The cited material does not establish what Tunisian law, the ticket’s fare terms, or a voluntary Tunisair policy would provide in this case.

What should a passenger do after a downgrade?
- Keep the booking evidence. Save the original ticket or itinerary showing the class purchased, the downgrade notice, the boarding pass if you flew, and proof of payment for this segment.
- Write to Tunisair and the seller. If you booked through an agent or another ticket seller, contact that seller as well. Ask for the reason for the cabin change and an itemized explanation of any refund or other remedy offered.
- Confirm the flight details. Request the operating carrier and, if relevant, the aircraft registration and cabin configuration. These details can help clarify what happened, but an A320 label by itself does not establish the explanation.
- Check the applicable rules before claiming a specific amount. Provide the full itinerary and operating-carrier information when assessing whether EU261 applies; otherwise, ask the airline or seller to identify the fare terms or other policy they rely on.
