Margaret Owen, a 94-year-old Jewish human rights barrister, was arrested at a pro-Palestine demonstration in Liverpool after displaying a sign supporting Palestine Action, according to Al Jazeera’s 2026 report. Police reportedly arrested demonstrators on suspicion of wearing or carrying an article expressing support for a proscribed organisation; that suspicion is not a finding of guilt. The demonstration was organised by Defend Our Juries to challenge Palestine Action’s proscription.
Who is Margaret Owen?
Owen is a human rights barrister whose work has included advancing women’s human rights. Al Jazeera’s report says she received an OBE in 2013, particularly for work on widows’ rights. The reporting identifies her as Jewish and 94 years old at the time of the 2026 demonstration.

What happened at the Liverpool protest?
On 27 September 2026, Defend Our Juries held a demonstration outside the Labour Party conference in Liverpool. The group’s stated purpose was to challenge the proscription of Palestine Action, which Al Jazeera describes as a terrorist organisation proscribed in the UK. The reports focus on signs expressing support for Palestine Action, not simply support for Palestine.

She said, “I’ve been trying to get arrested for quite some time.” The report describes her aim as drawing attention to civil disobedience and the proscription.

What reason did police give for the arrests?
Merseyside Police’s reported grounds were suspicion of wearing or carrying an article supporting a proscribed organisation. This is the police suspicion reported in connection with the arrests, not a determination that any individual committed an offence. The organisers were challenging the proscription; that protest position and the police’s stated suspicion describe different parts of the event, not a court ruling.

The Al Jazeera report, reproduced by 234Radio, attributes a total of 82 arrests to Merseyside Police and says those arrested were released on bail. IBTimes UK also reports 82 arrests and says 79 additional people were reported for summons. These figures describe different reported procedural categories and should not be combined into a single arrest total.

The reporting reviewed here does not establish whether Owen was charged or the outcome of any later hearing. An arrest or release on bail does not by itself establish that someone has been charged, prosecuted or convicted.
