The “5-Digit O(1) Slot Isolation” idea is a proposal from an author-maintained project, the Utyansky Index. It is not an established industry technique, and its speed, regression-prevention and token-saving claims have no independent verification that we can point to. Whether vibe coding “breaks at scale” is also a framing claim rather than a settled finding. For running parallel AI coding tasks today, the best-documented option is Git worktrees. They keep working files apart, but they are not a security boundary and they do not remove the need to review and merge changes.
What vibe coding means, and why people say it strains at scale
Vibe coding describes a workflow in which a developer states intent in natural language, lets a model generate code, and then validates the result mainly by running it. A secondary review of the practice describes this loop and notes that model capability is uneven across tasks, so the same workflow can work well for one change and poorly for another. That unevenness is the usual starting point for the “breaks at scale” argument: as a codebase grows, more files depend on each other, and a generated change that runs in isolation may still break something elsewhere.
That argument is plausible, but it is a hypothesis about how the practice behaves across projects. No public study we could identify measures a fixed failure threshold for vibe coding as project size grows, so the title’s claim should be read as a useful framing of a real risk, not as a proven law.

The phrase “5-Digit O(1) Slot Isolation” points to the Utyansky Index, a repository that proposes assigning five-digit numeric coordinates to code elements so they can be addressed directly. The repository’s own language describes “O(1) addressing.” The idea is the author’s design, and the surrounding material frames it as a way to isolate a narrow region of code for an agent to work on.

The proposal’s own phrasing, including its question “What is the Utyansky Index and Why is it Needed?”, reflects the author’s framing. It does not show that developers have adopted the approach or agree that it solves the problem described above.
What O(1) does and does not establish
O(1) is a statement about how the cost of an operation changes as the input grows: constant time means the cost does not rise with the size of the collection being searched. It is a property of the lookup mechanism, not of the identifier format. A five-digit code is simply a fixed-width string. Whether looking up a slot takes constant time depends on how the index is stored and how the code is organized, and those details are what an implementation would have to show.

So a fixed-width identifier alone does not prove constant-time retrieval, and it does not prove isolation. Those are separate properties that need separate evidence.
Claim-by-claim status
| Claim | Source of the claim | Independent status |
|---|---|---|
| Five-digit coordinates can address code elements | Utyansky Index repository (author) | Described in the proposal; no independent implementation we could verify |
| O(1) lookup | Utyansky Index repository (author) | Not independently benchmarked in public sources |
| Isolation of a slot from the rest of the codebase | Utyansky Index repository (author) | Not independently tested |
| Prevention of regressions | Utyansky Index repository (author) | Not established by independent evidence |
| Token savings for AI agents | Utyansky Index repository (author) | Not established; no measured figures from an independent source |
If you see figures for any of these claims attributed to the proposal, treat them as the author’s assertions. We have not found an independent test, replication or named publisher that reports them as measured results.

Git worktrees: the documented alternative
Visual Studio Code’s official guidance for coding agents describes starting a task in a new Git worktree when the task should not change the active workspace. A worktree is a second working directory linked to the same repository, with its own checked-out branch. The same guidance notes two limits that matter for planning. First, the new worktree starts from committed Git state, so uncommitted changes in your main workspace are not carried into it. Second, worktree isolation is not a security boundary.
The Visual Studio Code workflow guide recommends separate worktrees for independent tasks, but it also explains that integration conflicts can still happen when the branches are combined.

What a worktree isolates
- Working files: each task edits its own directory, so two agents do not write into the same files at the same time.
- Branch state: each worktree has its own branch, which keeps a half-finished change out of the other tasks.
What a worktree does not isolate
- Security: a worktree does not restrict what commands, files outside the directory, or network endpoints an agent can reach.
- Shared resources: a database, a local port or a running service used by two tasks is still shared.
- Merge risk: two branches that edit the same lines or depend on each other’s behavior still need review and conflict resolution.
Comparing the two approaches on the same axes
| Axis | Five-digit slot proposal | Git worktrees |
|---|---|---|
| What is isolated | A narrower code region addressed by numeric coordinates, as the author describes it | A separate working directory and branch for each task |
| Boundary that enforces isolation | Not specified in public material we could verify | Separate directory and Git branch; Visual Studio Code’s guidance states it is not a security boundary |
| Limits on commands, files or network | Not established | Not provided by worktrees themselves |
| How changes are reviewed and merged | Not described in the proposal material we could verify | Standard Git branch review and merge; integration conflicts remain possible |
| Independent performance measurements | None found; figures are the author’s assertions | Not a performance claim |
Setting up parallel tasks with worktrees
- Commit the changes you want the new task to start from. A worktree begins at committed state, so run
git statusfirst and commit or stash anything you need. - Create a worktree with a new branch:
git worktree add ../myapp-login -b agent/login. This creates a sibling directory and a branch namedagent/loginfrom your current HEAD. - Open the agent in that directory only. Confirm with
git -C ../myapp-login statusthat it shows the branch you expect. - Repeat for each independent task, using a different directory and branch name. Run
git worktree listto see every active worktree. - Review each branch’s diff against its base before merging, for example with
git diff main...agent/login. Merge one branch at a time and rerun your tests after each merge, since conflicts and behavior changes can appear only when branches are combined. - When a task is merged or abandoned, remove its worktree with
git worktree remove ../myapp-loginand delete the branch withgit branch -d agent/loginonce it has been merged.
Each worktree needs its own dependency install and build output, so disk use and setup time grow with the number of parallel tasks. Shared services such as a local database still need their own safeguards.
What would be needed to support the five-digit claims
If the proposal is to be treated as more than a design idea, the following would need to exist in public:

With five total USB ports and an SD card reader, you’ll never need a clunky dongle for your professional gear.
- A runnable implementation that others can inspect and execute, with the code that maps coordinates to elements.
- A stated benchmark protocol: the codebases used, the task set, the baseline workflow, and how many repeated runs were measured.
- Independent replication by someone other than the author, reporting both results and failures.
- A defined threat model that says what the isolation does and does not protect against.
- A documented review and merge procedure, showing how changes from separate slots are integrated and tested.
- Regression results from real repositories, not only from constructed examples.
Until that evidence is public, the most accurate description of the five-digit method is a proposal with unverified performance claims, and the most accurate description of Git worktrees is a documented way to keep parallel working files apart.
Readers who want to test the idea themselves can compare a worktree-based workflow against a slot-based one on a real repository, measuring the same tasks, merge conflicts and test failures on each. That kind of side-by-side measurement is what the proposal currently lacks.
