On October 5, 2026, U.S. stocks moved in different directions in early trading, the euro weakened amid investor concerns about France, and Brazilian markets surged after a presidential-election result surprised poll watchers. These were separate market moves with different reported catalysts—not evidence that one event drove all three.

What moved in each market on October 5?

Reuters, in a report republished by Kitco News on October 5, 2026, described a divergent early-trading snapshot rather than a uniform global rally or selloff. The figures below refer to that report’s October 5 observations, not current prices.

Market or asset October 5, 2026 report Reported context
Dow Jones Industrial Average Down 0.57% in early trading U.S. indexes were mixed in the early session.
S&P 500 Up 0.14% in early trading U.S. indexes were mixed in the early session.
Nasdaq Composite Up about 0.5% in early trading U.S. indexes were mixed in the early session.
STOXX 600 Up 0.15% European shares were uneven.
Paris shares Down about 1.1%, at six-month lows Investors were concerned about France’s debt and political gridlock.
Euro Fell as much as 0.8% to $1.1160, a 17-month low, then recovered to about $1.119 Reuters linked the weakness to concerns about France.
French 10-year bond premium over German debt Above 150 basis points on the preceding Friday A measure of the yield premium investors demanded for French debt relative to German debt.
iShares MSCI Brazil ETF Up about 14% Brazilian markets rallied after the first round of the presidential election.

Reuters also reported that Brent crude was $101.57 per barrel and U.S. crude was $89.70 per barrel on October 5. It described elevated borrowing costs and Treasury yields as part of the broader backdrop, alongside competing oil-market factors: conflict-related supply concerns, rising Middle East exports and a G7 pledge to boost supply.

Why did the euro fall?

Reuters said the euro had fallen about 2.5% over the preceding month as investors weighed France’s rising debt and political gridlock ahead of the next presidential election. On October 5, the currency touched its reported 17-month low before recovering partway.

The French-German 10-year yield premium was above 150 basis points on the preceding Friday, according to Reuters. A wider premium indicates investors were demanding more yield to hold French government debt than comparable German debt. The report described concern about possible spillover to other European markets; it did not establish a sovereign crisis, a default forecast or confirmed contagion.

Neil Wilson, a Saxo strategist quoted by Reuters, characterized France as “the real deal in terms of risk premia for the euro.” That was a strategist’s assessment of market risk, not an official policy statement.

Why did Brazilian markets surge?

Brazilian markets rallied after Flavio Bolsonaro outperformed poll predictions in the first round of the presidential election and advanced to a runoff against incumbent Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva, Reuters reported on October 5. The iShares MSCI Brazil ETF was up about 14% in the report’s snapshot.

Reuters attributed the investor reaction in part to hopes that Bolsonaro would pursue a more business-friendly policy agenda. Those were market expectations, not a guarantee of future policy, election outcome or investment returns. The ETF move is a reported change in a financial instrument, not a recommendation.

Why were U.S. stocks mixed, and what changed for Fed expectations?

In early trading on October 5, 2026, the Dow was lower while the S&P 500 and Nasdaq Composite were higher. Reuters connected changing interest-rate expectations to weaker-than-expected September job growth and downward revisions to payrolls for the prior two months.

As reported by Reuters from CME FedWatch, the market-implied probability of an October Federal Reserve rate increase had fallen to 18%, from 64% a week earlier. That reading reflected market pricing at the time; it was not a Fed decision or commitment. Reuters also said a December tightening remained largely priced in.

Lower expectations for an October hike did not remove other market pressures. Reuters noted elevated yields and oil prices in its October 5 account. Lisa Shalett, chief investment officer of Morgan Stanley Wealth Management, wrote in an email on Monday, as quoted by Reuters: “Relative equity market calm amid the bond market’s ‘perfect storm’ is understandable, given accelerating economic growth and the AI boom’s rate insensitivity,”

How to read the headline without treating it as one market signal

The headline brings together different asset types, time windows and explanations. An index’s early-session percentage change is not directly comparable to a currency’s intraday low, a bond spread observed on the preceding Friday or an ETF’s reported move. The Reuters account describes market observations alongside investor interpretations; those interpretations are not proof that the cited political or economic factor alone caused a price move.

  • U.S. equities: the report linked changing rate expectations to labor-market data, while the three major indexes moved in different directions.
  • The euro and French debt: the currency’s reported decline coincided with investor concern about French fiscal and political risks.
  • Brazilian assets: the rally followed an election result and reported hopes about possible policy direction.
  • Broader conditions: elevated yields and oil remained part of the backdrop even as October Fed-hike expectations eased.
