The available sources do not verify the headline’s specific claim that a Republican blamed Barack Obama for high gas prices or that Americans “roasted” the speaker. What the 2026 price timeline shows
National averages are dated snapshots, not a quote for every station or a live price. AAA reported these U.S. regular-gas observations during 2026:

Crude oil is the biggest general factor
The U.S. Energy Information Administration identifies crude oil as the largest factor in retail gasoline prices. That is a general explanation of price formation: crude is a major input into gasoline, and its cost can change with supply expectations and events affecting oil markets. When conflict threatens oil trade routes, concern about future supply can affect crude markets and, in turn, gasoline prices; the dated reports provide context for volatility, not a calculation assigning a precise share of the pump price to the conflict. Forecasts are not later observations
In January, EIA forecast lower average gasoline prices in 2026 and 2027 as crude prices fell. That was an outlook made before the later price observations and events; it should be read as a forecast, not as a claim that prices remained low throughout the year. Can a president be blamed for gas prices?
A president’s policies can be part of the wider context, but the evidence here does not isolate their effect from crude-oil markets, supply disruptions, and other factors. A broad price timeline or a general explanation of gasoline pricing cannot, by itself, demonstrate that Barack Obama—or any other president—caused the 2026 rise. Establishing that specific claim would require the original statement and evidence tied to the particular policy or price change being discussed.
