Travel technology is a credible frontier for AI investment because travel combines a large economic footprint with complicated, connected workflows—from searching and booking to payments, customer service and handling disruptions. AI could improve those workflows, but sector growth and technology spending are not proof of AI-specific returns. The investment case depends on whether companies can integrate fragmented systems and show measurable improvements in cost, service or revenue.
Why is travel technology the next frontier for AI investment?
Travel is both a large market and a coordination problem. A single trip can involve airlines, hotels, rail operators, travel agencies, payment providers and support teams, each with its own inventory, rules and systems. AI could help make sense of those inputs, tailor options to a traveler and automate parts of the work. That makes travel a plausible place to apply AI—not a guaranteed source of attractive investment returns.
The scale is clear, but it needs to be interpreted correctly. The World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC) reported that global Travel & Tourism investment exceeded US$1 trillion in 2025, up 8.5% year on year, while the sector contributed US$11.6 trillion to global GDP. Those figures describe the broad sector, not spending on AI, software or travel technology specifically. WTTC also reported that the United States, China, India and Saudi Arabia together invested nearly US$500 billion in the sector in 2025.
Airline economics show why market growth alone is not enough. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) reported 5.7% global passenger-traffic growth in 2025, alongside an estimated US$45 billion in airline net profit and a collective net margin of 4.2%. Its 2026 outlook warned that the oil-price shock was likely to halve profits and margins. Travel demand can rise even while the businesses that provide it face tight margins or sudden cost pressure.

How is AI changing travel booking and operations?
The most credible opportunities are specific tasks in a wider travel workflow, rather than a single AI that independently runs the whole industry.
Planning and discovery
Conversational tools can help travelers explore destinations, compare possibilities and organize preferences before they book. Amadeus describes travelers using AI tools alongside travel apps. In this role, AI can help turn an open-ended request into options; the traveler still needs reliable details and a way to complete the booking.
Personalization and simpler bookings
In an Expedia Group survey, 214 senior travel-management-company (TMC) decision-makers across ten countries reported rising traveler expectations for blended trip planning (85%), booking simplicity (84%), loyalty rewards (83%), personalization (81%) and mobile booking (76%). These are reported expectations in a defined business-travel survey, not percentages of all travelers. Expedia said only 30–40% of the surveyed TMC leaders felt very confident they could meet several of the cited expectations.

AI could help surface relevant options or reduce steps in a booking journey. Whether that produces more completed bookings, better customer retention or lower servicing costs is a separate question that requires company-level evidence.
Customer service and disruption handling
Travel changes create multi-step work: a canceled flight may require checking alternatives, fare rules, availability, hotel connections and a customer’s preferences. AI could gather information, suggest a resolution or prepare a service interaction. Allowing a system to make consequential changes without approval is a higher bar; current evidence points to limited traveler willingness to hand over that control.
Operations and business travel
Automation and real-time data analysis may help companies coordinate service and operating decisions. In Expedia Group’s survey, 97% of respondents said their organizations were investing in automation and real-time data analytics. That indicates reported investment among those surveyed, not measured productivity gains attributable to AI.

Infrastructure and orchestration
AI applications depend on access to the information and actions behind the interface. Amadeus describes platforms spanning search, booking, payments, operations and traveler servicing for airlines, airports, hotels, rail, agencies, tour operators and search platforms. Expedia Group identifies APIs as part of its B2B modernization proposition. These examples illustrate the integration layer involved; they do not establish a common return on investment across providers.
Are travel companies actually investing in AI?
There is evidence of substantial technology investment and reported AI adoption, but the figures answer different questions and should not be combined into an industry-wide AI-spending estimate.
| Evidence | What was reported | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| WTTC, 2026 release reporting 2025 data | More than US$1 trillion invested in global Travel & Tourism in 2025, up 8.5% year on year | Broad sector investment, not AI or software spending |
| Amadeus, Global Report 2025 | €1.453 billion in R&D in 2025, equal to 22% of annual revenue | One company’s R&D commitment; not all of it is identified as AI spending |
| WTTC and Trip.com Group, 2025 report announcement | 91% of travel businesses planned to increase technology investment | A reported intention; the announcement excerpt does not state the underlying sampling details |
| Expedia Group, 2026 release on a Nov. 26–Dec. 4, 2025 survey | All 214 surveyed TMC decision-makers reported AI adoption | Survey responses from senior decision-makers in ten named countries, not audited industry-wide adoption |
Amadeus lists AI and generative AI among its 2025 technology themes, alongside cloud migration, contactless and biometric-enabled travel, and quantum research. Its R&D figure is not an AI-only budget, and the disclosure does not by itself show what returns the spending generated.

The Expedia Group survey covered decision-makers in the United States, United Kingdom, Netherlands, Italy, Belgium, Spain, Australia, China, India and Japan. Fieldwork ran from November 26 to December 4, 2025. Because it is a company-sponsored survey of a defined group, its reported adoption and investment figures should be read as respondents’ accounts, not as a census of travel companies.

Fragmented data and incompatible systems
Travel information is distributed across suppliers and platforms. McKinsey identifies siloed data and incompatible systems as barriers to implementation. If an AI tool cannot access current availability, rules or service records—or cannot pass a change to the system that must carry it out—it may produce a plausible answer without completing the job. Fragmentation can also make it harder to learn whether an intervention improved the outcome.
Benefits that are difficult to measure
McKinsey notes that generic enterprise copilots and chatbots have often scaled quickly but delivered diffuse, hard-to-measure benefits. A travel investment case is stronger when tied to a defined workflow and a baseline: for example, resolution time, booking conversion, disruption recovery, staff hours or another outcome the business can track. The cited sources do not provide a common cross-company ROI comparison.
Trust and the limits of autonomy
McKinsey’s analysis reports that more than 90% of customers expressed some confidence in AI travel information, but comfort varied by task: it was greater for open-ended inspiration than for high-stakes uses such as visa information or customer-service resolutions. In Skift’s State of Travel 2025, as reported by McKinsey, only 2% of respondents were willing to let an AI tool make and modify bookings without human oversight. Confidence in advice should not be mistaken for permission to act.

Demand does not guarantee vendor returns
Airline traffic growth and broad Travel & Tourism investment do not ensure that a particular software provider can earn strong margins. Customers may face thin operating margins, demand shocks and fuel-price volatility; implementation costs and dependence on large travel providers can also affect a vendor’s economics. IATA’s 2026 warning about oil prices is a reminder that the sector’s operating conditions can change even when longer-term demand is substantial.
Surveys and forecasts have limits
The 91% technology-investment figure is presented in a WTTC and Trip.com Group announcement without sampling details in the excerpt. It should not be treated as an audited universal statistic. Likewise, statements about future AI agents in that announcement are forecasts, not guarantees of what current systems can reliably do.

Can AI book and manage an entire trip?
AI can assist with parts of trip planning and booking, but the evidence here does not establish that it can reliably manage an entire trip end to end without human oversight. Recommendations and conversational planning are different from authority to purchase a ticket, interpret fare conditions, change an itinerary or resolve a disruption across several providers.
For now, the practical distinction is between assistance and delegated control. A tool may help find options or prepare a change while a traveler or agent confirms the decision. Autonomous booking and modification require dependable supplier connections, current information, clear handling of errors and traveler consent—especially when a mistake could affect a connection, a refund or an important travel requirement.
How should investors evaluate travel-AI opportunities?
Rather than treating an AI label or pilot count as evidence of value, compare companies by the part of the travel workflow they serve and the results they can demonstrate.
- Layer served: Is the product a traveler interface, booking or distribution system, supplier operations tool, payment service, data platform or enterprise infrastructure?
- Integration burden: Which systems and suppliers must connect, how compatible are they, and how reliable is the underlying data?
- Measured workflow value: Does the company report a clear baseline and an outcome such as booking conversion, service resolution, disruption recovery or staff time saved?
- Autonomy and trust: What may the system recommend, book, change or resolve? Which actions require human approval, and how are mistakes handled?
- Economics and resilience: How do customer concentration, implementation costs, recurring revenue and exposure to travel-provider margins or demand shocks affect the business?
These questions help separate investment in useful infrastructure from investment that is simply branded as AI. Travel’s scale and operational complexity create room for meaningful applications, but attractive returns depend on integration, adoption and measurable value—not on the size of the travel market alone.
