Arizona Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo says Ketel Marte will have to answer for his own decisions rather than rely on Lovullo to shield him from questions. The change follows Marte’s failure to report to Arizona’s Aug. 17, 2026, game in Boston and a breakdown in communication; Lovullo described it as greater accountability, not an end to his support for the second baseman.
What Lovullo said about Marte
Lovullo made the comments on Arizona Sports’ “Burns & Gambo” show, according to reports by theScore and Burn City Sports. TheScore attributed the remarks to host John Gambadoro. Lovullo said he would tell Marte what he tells every player: “the decisions you make are going to be on you now.”
He added: “I’m going to eliminate protecting you the way I have,” and said he would let Marte answer questions on his own behalf. Lovullo explained that he had taken responsibility when things went wrong and protected players “like they’re my own boys,” but had concluded, “I can’t do that anymore.” The quotations are reported by theScore; the interview audio or a primary transcript was not available in the cited coverage.

Why the comments followed Marte’s Boston absence
Marte did not report to Arizona’s Aug. 17, 2026, game against the Boston Red Sox at Fenway Park. The Diamondbacks placed him on the restricted list and later transferred him to the injured list with a left-knee issue. Burn City Sports reported that Marte said he woke up in pain and apologized for not communicating with the team.

Burn City Sports also reported that Lovullo felt betrayed by the lack of communication. The manager’s stated change is about how he handles questions and responsibility after that episode; the reporting does not establish that he is withdrawing support from Marte.
Earlier incidents had different circumstances
Burn City Sports described several earlier episodes that contributed to public scrutiny of Marte, while noting that they were not identical incidents:
Rank #2
- In 2025, Marte missed games after his Arizona home was burglarized while he was at the All-Star Game, and later apologized to teammates for not returning as planned.
- In 2024, he requested a day off late in the season while Arizona was in a playoff race.
- In 2023, he did not report to Yankee Stadium for a game after believing weather would cause it to be postponed.
The same report said Lovullo had agreed to a new two-year contract shortly before these comments. That contract detail is reported context; the cited coverage did not include a primary Diamondbacks announcement.
