If you’re a Fire Emblem: Three Houses fan wondering which path to choose first in Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave, Dietrich is a compelling place to begin. He is a swordsman from Fódlan—the land you know from Three Houses—whose story takes him to Dagda, where his drive to fight becomes a story about forming bonds. That makes his path an inviting bridge between the games, not a required sequel route: Nintendo says Fortune’s Weave is designed to stand on its own, and you can switch between its four protagonists.
Why Dietrich is a strong first path for Three Houses fans
Dietrich offers the clearest personal connection to Three Houses: he comes from Fódlan. In Nintendo’s developer interview, director Toshiyuki Kusakihara describes him as “an exceptional swordsman who happens to wash up in Dagda after surviving a shipwreck.” Dagda lies south of Fódlan, but the new game takes place in a different region and time period.

That connection gives returning fans familiar context without making Dietrich’s story dependent on prior knowledge. He arrives in Dagda as an outsider, and his path follows what happens when a man drawn to combat encounters the possibility of connection beyond the battlefield.

Kusakihara says, “He lives for battle, so when he hears about the Heroic Games, he leaps at the chance to take part.” The director describes the heart of Dietrich’s story as “a man with a kind of self-destructive impulse, someone who only feels alive in the midst of battle, and how he comes to discover bonds with others in the land of Dagda.”
#1 Best Overall
- Here, order is maintained by the Church of Seiros from its headquarters at Garreg Mach Monastery, home to the Officers Academy, where you’re invited to teach one of its three mighty houses: The Black Eagles, The Blue Lions, and The Golden Deer.
- Which house will you choose?
- As its professor, you must lead your students in class and in tactical RPG battles wrought with strategic, new twists to overcome.
That tension is the best reason to choose him first: Dietrich’s fighting skill is part of his identity, but Nintendo’s description points to a character arc about more than winning battles. The official profile similarly presents him as a swordfighter seeking a stronger opponent. This is a useful starting point for fans who enjoy character-driven stories, without implying that Dietrich is a stand-in for any Three Houses character.
How Fortune’s Weave differs from Three Houses
The shared world is real, but the narrative setup is not a direct continuation of Three Houses. Producer Masahiro Higuchi says, “We developed the game with the guiding principle that players should be able to fully enjoy it as a standalone title, even if they aren’t familiar with Fire Emblem: Three Houses.”
Rank #2
- Compatible with Nintendo Switch only
The contrast is in how the stories are arranged. Three Houses follows perspectives tied to three powers that ultimately oppose one another. Fortune’s Weave begins with four protagonist paths, which converge toward a shared goal in the latter half. Nintendo says players can follow those paths in any order and switch between them along the way.

Nintendo Life’s September 17, 2026 launch-day guide recommends Dietrich as one good first choice, pointing to his character arc and combat strengths. That is an editorial recommendation, not an official required order; the guide also recognizes that there is no single right answer. Because paths can be changed during play, starting with Dietrich does not mean committing to him for the entire game.

- Command Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters like Edelgard, Dimitri, and Claude in epic real-time battles
- Play through three distinct storylines set in the Fire Emblem: Three Houses universe, each with a different ending, from the point of view of a new protagonist, Shez.
- Combine the action-packed Warriors-style gameplay with the strategy and style of the Fire Emblem series
- Fight through hordes of enemies with Fire Emblem: Three Houses characters and their distinct abilities
- Use Fire Emblem series mechanics like the weapons triangle, character classes, crests, and battalions to tailor your strategy
Choose Dietrich first if you want a Fódlan connection and a story centered on a battle-seeking swordsman finding bonds in a new land. If another protagonist’s premise interests you more, you can begin there instead and return to Dietrich later.
What to expect from his path in play
Fortune’s Weave is a tactical RPG built around turn-based grid battles. Positioning, attack reach, and which units face one another matter; outside battle, Nintendo describes city preparation, ally recruitment, quests, resource gathering, and dungeons. Nintendo Life’s guide also notes Dietrich’s combat kit as a reason to consider him early, though the recommendation does not make his route mandatory for learning the game.

Platform and edition
Fire Emblem: Fortune’s Weave is listed for Nintendo Switch 2, not the original Nintendo Switch. Nintendo lists a physical edition. The optional Dagdan Collection adds a steelbook case, character art cards, a map of Dagda, and an artbook; those extras are not needed to access Dietrich’s story.
