A reported hydraulics problem on the Yankees’ original charter aircraft delayed their trip to Tampa and forced the team to change airports. After waiting more than five hours at Westchester County Airport, the group traveled by bus to LaGuardia, then flew to Tampa and arrived at about 1 a.m. Friday, ahead of Saturday’s scheduled ALDS opener against the Rays.
What delayed the Yankees’ trip to Tampa?
The original aircraft had a reported hydraulics issue. The Associated Press report, published by The Washington Post on October 2, 2026, did not provide a more detailed technical diagnosis.
The team arrived at Westchester County Airport at about 2:30 p.m. Thursday and remained aboard the original aircraft for more than five hours. The Yankees then took a bus roughly 30 miles to LaGuardia Airport. Their replacement charter departed around 10 p.m. and reached Tampa International Airport at about 1 a.m. Friday.

What did Boone and Cole say about the delay?
Manager Aaron Boone joked about the repair problem: “Hydraulics issue. Didn’t have a tall enough ladder to fix it.” He added, “I offered to go get my ladder at home. Declined.”

Gerrit Cole summed up the detour this way: “We drove further away from Tampa and then we worked our way closer back to Tampa, and then we flew to Tampa.” The AP report said players passed the wait with cards, conversation, video games and scrolling on their phones. Boone said the players seemed fine when he checked on them, and that the air conditioning worked for most of the wait.
Did the delay affect the ALDS schedule?
The Yankees arrived before their scheduled Saturday opener against the Tampa Bay Rays. The report describes a delayed trip and an airport change; it does not report a cancelled game or establish that the travel disruption affected the team’s performance.
