The Chicago White Sox named rookie left-hander Hagen Smith to open Game 1 of the American League Division Series against the Cleveland Guardians on Saturday, October 3, 2026. Manager Will Venable announced the assignment Friday. Smith is an opener, not a conventional starter whom the announcement projected to carry the game; Chicago is expected to use bullpen help behind him.
What Smith’s opener assignment means
Calling Smith the Game 1 opener describes his role at the start of Chicago’s pitching plan; it does not establish how many innings he will pitch. The club’s announcement pointed to bullpen support, but gave no fixed workload. That leaves the White Sox flexibility to respond to the game as it develops.
The five-game series schedule includes off-days, which can give teams more opportunity to deploy relievers aggressively. That context matters to both clubs’ pitching plans, but it does not guarantee a particular sequence or workload for Smith.

Why the White Sox chose Smith
Smith had just delivered three scoreless innings against Houston in the Wild Card Series, allowing two hits and striking out one before Jordan Hicks took over, according to the White Sox announcement on MLB.com. He also had recent experience against Cleveland: in three regular-season appearances against the Guardians, he allowed two earned runs on two hits over 5 2/3 innings.

MLB.com reported that Smith posted a 1.29 ERA in 18 regular-season appearances, including one start. The University of Arkansas’s 2026 report listed his season line as 3-3 with a 1.29 ERA, 41 strikeouts and 28.0 innings. The sources describe the same ERA but present different levels of statistical detail.
Smith’s path to the postseason
The White Sox selected Smith fifth overall in the 2024 MLB Draft out of Arkansas. MLB.com reported that he made his major-league debut in 2026 after an August callup. His Game 1 assignment puts the rookie at the beginning of Chicago’s postseason pitching plan after a short but effective appearance in the Wild Card round.

Speaking Friday, October 2, Smith described his mindset after his Wild Card outing: “It’s cool. Obviously want to go out there and do the best I can for the team and just realizing it’s just baseball at the end of the day,” Smith said Friday. “Like, go to the Houston outing; after that first pitch, I was pretty anxious to get out there and throw the first pitch. And then after it’s like, ‘Oh, it’s just baseball.’”
The assignment and figures above were reported before first pitch. They do not establish the final score or Smith’s actual Game 1 performance.
