The South African rand extended its earlier losses in early trading on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, as the US dollar strengthened and oil-supply concerns weighed on risk-sensitive currencies. Reuters reported the rand at 16.5850 per US dollar at 0635 GMT, about 0.3% weaker than its previous close. That is a time-specific early-trade quote, not a closing price or a live rate.
What happened to the rand?
Reuters reported that the rand was trading at 16.5850 per US dollar at 0635 GMT on October 7, about 0.3% weaker than the previous close. The figure captures trading at that time; exchange rates move throughout the day. Reuters report republished by Business Recorder.
Why did the dollar weigh on the currency?
A stronger US dollar can make risk-sensitive emerging-market currencies less attractive. Reuters described reduced demand for risk-sensitive assets as part of the pressure on the rand. Investors were also waiting for minutes from the Federal Reserve’s September meeting for clues about the US central bank’s interest-rate outlook. The report did not specify a particular policy decision in those minutes.
How did oil-supply concerns add pressure?
Oil prices rose amid concerns about potential supply disruption. Reuters cited a storm threatening US oil-producing regions and Houthi attacks on Saudi Arabia; those concerns outweighed increased crude supplies from the Middle East, according to the report.

Higher oil prices matter to South Africa because the country imports most of its fuel. More expensive crude and refined products can raise the rand cost of imported fuel, adding pressure to domestic fuel prices and inflation. The South African Reserve Bank’s September 2026 bulletin describes this pass-through and notes that rand strength partly mitigated the effect of higher crude prices. South African Reserve Bank, September 2026 Quarterly Bulletin.
What the recent fuel-inflation figures show
The Reserve Bank bulletin reported that consumer fuel-price inflation accelerated to 34.3% in June 2026, its highest rate since September 2022, then moderated to 20.0% in August 2026. These are domestic inflation figures for those months, not measures of the rand’s October 7 exchange-rate move. The bulletin connects the changes to international crude and refined petroleum product prices and says a stronger rand partly cushioned the pass-through.

How long had the rand been weakening?
Reuters relayed an ETM Analytics estimate that the rand had weakened about 3.5% over the prior month. ETM attributed sustained dollar demand and the currency’s sensitivity to higher oil prices to South Africa’s petroleum imports, especially diesel. This is ETM Analytics’ estimate as reported by Reuters, not an independently verified calculation or a Reuters direct quote from a named analyst.
