Neither proves that the sealed message or record was true when it was sealed.
What is the Sigilbase mark made of?
A September 19, 2026 article describes the mark as a capital S set in Libre Caslon Text Bold, surrounded by a ring and cut in mirror image into a brass die so the wax impression reads the right way around. The article reports these design measurements:
- S cap height: 15 mm.
- Ring: 23 mm across and 0.8 mm wide.
- Die face: 25 mm across.
The article says the typeface’s fine hairlines shaped the design: at smaller sizes, those strokes might not engrave cleanly. It names The Little Blue Brush in London as the die maker. Why use a wax seal for a digital audit log?

For a digital audit log, Sigilbase’s physical stamp is a visual counterpart to the system’s cryptographic recordkeeping, not a substitute for it. A brass wax seal stamp can leave a distinctive physical impression; a digital ledger needs machine-checkable evidence to help detect changes to recorded events.
How does Sigilbase’s hash chain work?
Sigilbase’s official quickstart describes each stream as an independent ledger. Events are numbered from 1 without gaps, and the hash chain links events within a stream rather than crossing between streams. The quickstart says sealing runs every five minutes: the system builds a Merkle tree over unsealed event hashes, signs a checkpoint, and provides inclusion proofs that can show whether an event is included in that checkpoint. The 2026 article says each checkpoint is signed with the project’s key and each event is linked to the preceding event. A signature can attest that a checkpoint was sealed with the relevant key; linked hashes can make a later alteration detectable when a verifier checks the chain and checkpoint. This depends on the actual implementation, protection of signing keys, and sound verification. The quickstart describes the mechanism, but does not by itself establish how keys are managed or provide a complete threat model.
What can a seal or hash chain prove?

The distinction is integrity versus truth. Integrity evidence can support a claim that data has not changed since a checkpoint. It does not establish that the data was correct at the time it was recorded. The AIWithGhost article states the limitation this way: “A Sigilbase record proves it has not changed since it was received, and nothing about whether it was accurate when it arrived.” That is the article’s wording, not an independently verified guarantee about every Sigilbase deployment.

Where the analogy stops
Wax and cryptographic evidence are both about making interference detectable, but they expose different kinds of evidence. Wax gives a person a visible impression and possible signs of opening; a hash chain and signed checkpoint give a verifier data to check computationally. A wax seal can be carefully lifted and resealed. Digital evidence, in turn, is only as trustworthy as its implementation, key custody, and verification process. Neither type of seal independently validates the truth of what it protects.
