The PS Vita TV—sold in Western markets as PlayStation TV—now sells mainly through the secondary market, where used and boxed units can cost more than their original retail prices. Dated U.S. sales records show examples at $125 for a loose console and $179.99–$199.99 for boxed units. Finite used supply is a plausible reason for the premium, but the available evidence does not establish how much scarcity, collector interest, or other factors have driven prices.

What the Vita TV originally cost

Sony announced the PlayStation Vita TV in Japan in 2013. Its recommended retail price was ¥9,954 including tax; a ¥14,994 value pack included a DUALSHOCK 3 controller and an 8 GB memory card. Sony described the system as a compact device that connects to a television by HDMI and said a DUALSHOCK 3 controller was required. Sony’s 2013 announcement gives the original Japanese prices and bundle details.

For North America and Europe, Sony announced the name PlayStation TV, a standalone recommended price of $99 and €99, and a planned fall 2014 release. Those were announced launch prices, not current prices or evidence of a present-day replacement cost. Sony’s Western announcement specifies the regions and pricing.

What recent sale prices show

PriceCharting’s U.S. PlayStation TV page, accessed October 7, 2026, listed estimated values of $135.35 loose, $179.99 complete, and $272.10 new. Its recorded eBay sales included a loose console with a 16 GB memory card for $125 on September 30, 2026, boxed examples for $179.99 and $199.99 on October 1, 2026, and a boxed, tested example for $180 on August 11, 2026. PriceCharting’s listing distinguishes condition categories and records completed sales.

  • Play Fun PlayStation Games Together: Hundreds of titles to download and play including PlayStation Vita games, classic games from PS One and PSP systems, and more.
  • Remote Play: Stream most of your PS4 games from your PS4 system to your PlayStation TV over local wi-fi.
  • Easy to Set up and Play: Plug in and play on almost any TV in your home. A DUALSHOCK 3 or 4 controller (sold separately) is required.
  • PlayStationNow READY: Available later this year, PlayStation Now will give access to an expanding library of PS3 games to stream directly to PlayStation TV. Service may not be available in all areas.
  • Movies, TV Shows, Music: Download, rent, or stream from PlayStation Store, Music Unlimited or other entertainment apps.

These are dated reference points, not a guaranteed price on every marketplace or a complete measure of the market. PriceCharting says its estimates exclude unsold listings, so asking prices—especially unusually high ones—should not be treated as proof that buyers are paying that amount. The cited sales also do not establish a historical percentage increase.

Why it may cost more now

Buyers are shopping a secondary market

The Vita TV is an older console rather than a product with ordinary new retail supply. Recent tracked transactions are for used and boxed examples. When replacement stock is limited to what owners choose to sell, a buyer may have to pay more for a working unit in desirable condition. The available sources do not quantify how many units remain available.

Sony’s sales forecast fell short

Sony’s FY2015 filing says that, in the fiscal year ended March 31, 2015, it recorded an ¥11.2 billion write-down for components for PS Vita and PS TV because the latest PS TV unit-sales forecast did not reach the original forecast. The figure is a combined component write-down, not PS TV revenue, unit sales, or a measure of current scarcity. It supports the narrower conclusion that sales expectations for PS TV fell short; it does not show how many consoles Sony sold. Sony’s FY2015 Form 20-F contains the disclosure.

Niche appeal may contribute, but is not measured

A small Vita-family system designed for a television can appeal to people seeking that specific console experience or collecting unusual hardware. That is a plausible source of buyer interest, not a demonstrated explanation for a particular price: the cited sources do not measure collector demand or separate it from supply and other market influences.

Why two listings can have very different prices

A loose console and a boxed, complete system are not equivalent purchases. Sony’s Japanese value pack included a controller and memory card, and the marketplace records distinguish loose, complete, new, boxed, and tested examples. Before comparing prices, check:

  • Working condition: whether the seller tested the console and what the test covered.
  • Included parts: controller, memory card, power supply, HDMI cable, and other accessories listed in the sale.
  • Condition and packaging: loose, complete, or boxed condition, including the state of the box and accessories.
  • Region and model: confirm the exact version being offered rather than assuming every listing is identical.
  • Sale evidence: compare completed transactions for similar bundles, not just unsold asking prices.

Also keep geography and currency consistent. The original Japanese yen prices and the Western dollar and euro prices describe different markets and launch announcements; they are not directly interchangeable with present-day U.S. secondary-market sales.

What the evidence does—and does not—establish

The original Western standalone announcement was $99 or €99, while selected recent U.S. completed sales were above $99. That shows a difference between the announced North American launch price and these later U.S. sale examples, but it does not quantify the overall price rise. Sony’s filing establishes that PS TV sales forecasts missed the original forecast, not a low production total. The sources do not prove that collectors caused the premium or assign a share of current prices to any single factor.
