The iPhone 4 has a strong claim to being Apple’s most important smartphone design: it made glass, stainless steel and a high-density display central to the phone’s identity, while making the metal frame part of the antenna system. That is an argument about influence, not an objective ranking. The original iPhone remains the more fundamental breakthrough in interaction; the iPhone 4’s case rests on how decisively it reshaped the product’s visible form and presentation.

What made the iPhone 4 design different?

Apple announced the iPhone 4 on June 7, 2010, describing a new construction of glass and stainless steel. Apple called it the world’s thinnest smartphone at the time; that was the company’s launch claim, not an independent comparison in the available sources. The flat, sharply edged silhouette made the phone look markedly different from the rounded forms around it.

The materials were not merely decorative. Apple’s 2010 environmental report broke down the phone’s materials as 40.9 g of glass, 38.7 g of stainless steel, 24.7 g of battery, 15.4 g of circuit boards, 7.2 g of display, 5 g of other materials and 3.1 g of plastic. Those figures describe Apple’s accounting for this model, not a general rule about smartphone construction. Apple’s iPhone 4 environmental report

The steel band also served an engineering function as part of the antenna system, as contemporaneous WIRED launch coverage described. That integration is central to the design’s significance: a visible element helped define the phone’s outline while also doing practical work.

Why did the Retina display matter?

The iPhone 4 introduced Apple’s “Retina display” branding. Apple presented its screen as the highest-resolution phone display then. Separately, iFixit’s 2010 teardown said its pixel density was four times that of the iPhone 3GS. These are attributed launch-era comparisons, not claims about today’s displays.

The display gave the new exterior a clear experiential payoff: the phone was not only visually different as an object, but also presented text and images with a dramatic increase in pixel density over its predecessor. A later TIME retrospective identifies Retina display and build quality as aspects that remain central to Apple products, supporting the case for lasting significance without proving any definitive ranking.

What else changed beyond the exterior?

Apple’s launch announcement also listed FaceTime, a 5-megapixel camera with LED flash, HD video recording, the A4 processor and a 3-axis gyroscope. Together, these features made the iPhone 4 more than a materials refresh: the design arrived alongside a substantial set of hardware additions.

At the announcement, Apple CEO Steve Jobs called it “the biggest leap since the original iPhone”. That was Apple’s contemporaneous positioning, not an independent historical verdict. The original model introduced the foundational smartphone experience; the iPhone 4’s importance is better understood as a major refinement of how that experience looked and felt.

Does the iPhone 4 deserve to be called Apple’s most important design?

It depends on what “important” means. The original iPhone has the stronger claim if importance means establishing a new interaction model. The iPhone 4 has a compelling claim if the measure is the influence of a distinct physical design, the prominence of display quality, and the close relationship between engineering and exterior form.

  • Visible design: glass and stainless steel gave the phone a recognizably different, flat-sided appearance.
  • Display experience: Retina became a prominent way to communicate screen quality, and the iPhone 4 markedly increased pixel density over the 3GS.
  • Engineering in the form: the steel band was part of the antenna system, not simply trim.
  • Long-term significance: TIME’s retrospective connects display and build quality to Apple’s later product identity, but the available sources do not establish a systematic influence ranking across iPhone generations.

On those terms, “most important” is a defensible editorial judgment, not settled fact. The evidence supports calling the iPhone 4 one of Apple’s defining designs; it cannot demonstrate that it outranks every other model.
