The Galaxy S27 Ultra could be a major Samsung upgrade if reported battery and camera changes make it into the final phone. But as of October 3, 2026, Samsung has not announced the S27 Ultra or confirmed its specifications. The case for calling it one of Samsung’s best phones in years is therefore a possibility—not a verdict.
What the Galaxy S27 Ultra could improve
Recent reporting points to a possible 5,700 mAh battery, camera-processing changes, and a redesign of the telephoto setup. Each could affect the experience, but all remain unconfirmed reports rather than Samsung specifications. The S27’s price and release timing are also not established by the sources available as of October 3, 2026. Tom’s Guide’s recent report attributes the battery and price claims to leaks.
A larger reported battery could matter—if endurance improves
The rumored 5,700 mAh capacity would be higher than the S26 Ultra’s confirmed 5,000 mAh typical capacity. That difference could make the S27 Ultra more appealing to people who regularly run short of charge, but capacity alone does not establish how long a phone lasts. Screen efficiency, processor behavior, software, and real-world use all affect endurance. Samsung has not confirmed the S27 figure, and there are no independent S27 battery tests.

The reported telephoto change could be a trade-off
A September 29 report says Samsung may drop the S26 Ultra’s dedicated 10 MP 3x telephoto camera, without identifying a replacement. If that rumor proves accurate, the S27 could lose a useful intermediate zoom option even if other camera hardware or processing improves. The report does not establish the final camera array. Tom’s Guide describes the possibility as an unconfirmed leak.

Camera processing may change, but image quality is untested
Android Central reported on September 30, 2026, that the S27 Ultra’s camera processing may change. That is not evidence that photos or video will be better. Processing can affect detail, color, noise, and consistency, but the claim needs to be checked against finished hardware and independent comparisons.
The confirmed benchmark: Galaxy S26 Ultra
Samsung announced the Galaxy S26 series on February 25, 2026. The company’s published global specifications give the S26 Ultra a 6.9-inch display, a 200 MP wide camera, a 50 MP ultra-wide camera, a 50 MP telephoto camera with 5x optical zoom, a 10 MP telephoto camera with 3x optical zoom, and a 5,000 mAh typical battery. Samsung notes that regional availability and some specifications can vary. These are S26 specifications only; they should not be assumed for the S27 Ultra. Samsung’s announcement provides the confirmed baseline.

Samsung described the S26 series as combining “incredible performance, an industry-leading camera system, and Galaxy AI.” That is the company’s characterization, not an independent assessment of how the S27 will perform.
What must be established before calling the S27 Ultra a standout
A convincing upgrade requires more than a larger number on a rumored spec sheet. Once Samsung announces the phone, comparisons with the S26 Ultra should establish:

- Performance: Everyday speed and sustained performance, including whether the phone manages heat under demanding workloads.
- Display, design, and software: Any meaningful changes to the screen, handling, software support, or useful AI features.
- Value: The confirmed launch price and whether the improvements justify it. A price increase has been reported, but Samsung has not confirmed one.
Why “Samsung’s best phone in years” is still a question
The S27 Ultra has a plausible route to that reputation: a meaningfully longer-lasting battery and camera improvements could make everyday use better. But the same reports leave open a possible loss of the S26 Ultra’s dedicated 3x telephoto camera, and there is no confirmed S27 price, complete specification sheet, or independent performance testing.
Samsung’s official comparison point is the S26 Ultra, not a forecast of what the S27 will be. Until the S27 is announced and tested, the fairest conclusion is that it could be a significant upgrade, but the evidence does not yet show that it will be.
