Repeated tropical downpours are forecast across the National Weather Service (NWS) Tallahassee area through the weekend and into early next week. The main near-term risk is rapid runoff and localized flooding where heavy rain overwhelms urban and poor-drainage areas. The highest forecast totals and a formal Flood Watch apply to parts of the western Florida Panhandle—not Tallahassee or Leon County, which were not listed in the watch as of October 3, 2026. Check NWS Tallahassee alerts for changes.
Why repeated downpours are expected
NWS Tallahassee said abundant tropical moisture is being funneled over the region, supporting showers and downpours that may come in waves rather than as one isolated storm. In its October 3, 2026 morning discussion, the office reported precipitable water values of 2.2–2.5 inches. That is a measure of moisture in the atmosphere, not a forecast of how much rain will fall at a particular location.
Some downpours could drop 1–2 inches in less than an hour, according to the NWS. Such intense rates can send water quickly into streets and low-lying areas, especially where drainage is poor.

The forecast differs by location. NWS Tallahassee expected generally 2–5 inches across the broader forecast area outside the western Panhandle Flood Watch. For the watch area, it forecast 3–6 inches, with locally higher totals of 8–10 inches possible. These are forecast amounts from the October 3 NWS products, not observed totals.

A Flood Watch means flooding is possible in the specified area and time window; it does not mean flooding is certain. NWS said an eastward expansion could happen, but the forecaster did not have enough confidence to issue one at the time of the discussion. Watch and warning boundaries can change, so use the live NWS Tallahassee alerts rather than relying on an earlier map.
When rain and flooding concerns are greatest
Saturday into Sunday
The NWS discussion identified late Saturday evening into Sunday as the period of greatest flooding-rain potential in the western Panhandle, as a shortwave moves along the northern Gulf Coast. Downpours can still affect other parts of the forecast area.

Monday and Tuesday
Rain remains possible early in the work week, but the timing is less certain. The forecast depends in part on when an upper-level trough and nearby front move through, leaving uncertainty over whether Monday or Tuesday will be wetter.

Fast runoff in built-up and low-lying areas
High rainfall rates can overwhelm drainage systems and produce localized or flash flooding. This can happen even when a major river is not expected to flood. Avoid flooded roads and never go around barricades; moving water can conceal the road surface and hazards beneath it.

River response depends on how much rain falls
Under the general 2–5-inch forecast, NWS said mainstem rivers were less likely to have significant issues because conditions before this rain were drier. If widespread totals reach 6 inches or more, some rivers could approach action stage and smaller streams could see minor flooding.
A separate NWS product showed a Flood Warning for the Shoal River near Crestview, where minor flooding was forecast to begin Monday evening, with a crest of 9.0 feet Tuesday morning. This warning is for the river near Crestview; it is not a Tallahassee or Leon County flood warning. Check the live NWS hazards page for current products.

What to do during the rain
- Monitor current NWS watches and warnings, especially if your plans involve driving or low-lying areas.
- Do not drive through floodwater or go around a barricade. Turn around and choose another route.
- Be ready to act if a Flash Flood Warning is issued for your location; a watch alone means flooding is possible, not guaranteed.
As NWS Tallahassee puts it: “Remember, turn around, dont drown!”
