Tadaryl Shipp was 17 when Colleen Slemmer was murdered in Knoxville in 1995; Christa Pike was 18. According to the Associated Press, Shipp’s age made him ineligible for a death sentence. He was convicted of first-degree murder and conspiracy and received life in prison with the possibility of parole, plus a consecutive 25-year term for conspiracy. Pike was the only defendant sentenced to death.
Why was Shipp’s sentence different?
The key distinction reported in the case coverage is age and capital eligibility: Shipp was 17 at the time of the crime, while Pike was 18. The Associated Press reported that Shipp was ineligible for a death sentence because of his age. The Tennessee Supreme Court opinion affirming Pike’s sentence records the jury’s findings in her capital sentencing; it does not adjudicate Shipp’s age eligibility.
That difference explains why Shipp did not receive a death sentence. It does not, on its own, establish that the two defendants had equal roles or that their culpability was the same.
What was Shipp convicted of?
Shipp was not acquitted of Slemmer’s murder. The Tennessee Court of Criminal Appeals’ opinion records convictions for first-degree murder and conspiracy to commit first-degree murder. Shipp received a life sentence for murder and a 25-year sentence for conspiracy, with the conspiracy term to run consecutively.
#1 Best Overall
The Associated Press describes the life sentence as carrying the possibility of parole. The available case records and reporting establish the convictions and sentence structure; they should not be reduced to a comparison of sentence lengths alone.
Why did Pike receive a death sentence?
Pike was 18 when Slemmer was killed and was the only defendant sentenced to death. In Pike’s capital sentencing, the jury found beyond a reasonable doubt that the murder involved torture or serious physical abuse beyond that needed to cause death, and that it was committed to avoid, interfere with, or prevent lawful arrest or prosecution. The jury found those aggravating circumstances outweighed mitigating circumstances beyond a reasonable doubt.
Rank #2
The Tennessee Supreme Court affirmed Pike’s convictions and sentences. In its proportionality review, it concluded that her death sentence was not arbitrary or disproportionate to sentences in similar cases, considering the crime and the defendant. That conclusion should not be read as identifying Shipp’s sentence as the relevant comparison or as determining that the defendants had equal roles.

Shadolla Peterson’s case followed a different course. The Shipp appellate opinion says she pleaded guilty to accessory after the fact and received six years’ probation. The available sources do not establish a full comparison of her role, cooperation, or plea negotiations, so those factors cannot be offered as proven explanations for her sentence.

Pike’s scheduled execution on September 30, 2026, did not result in her death. The Associated Press reported that two doses of pentobarbital were administered, after which she was taken by ambulance. Governor Bill Lee ordered a third-party review and halted the remaining scheduled execution for the rest of 2026. The Tennessee Department of Correction confirmed that Pike was transported to an off-site medical facility.
In an Associated Press report published October 2, Pike’s attorneys said in a court filing that she had been unconscious and on a ventilator in the hours after the attempt, and that medical staff were working to save her life. The Department of Correction advisory confirms transport but does not report her subsequent condition. The latest reporting cited here does not establish her condition or legal status after October 2, 2026.
