Director Francis Lawrence calls The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping a “return to form” because it brings back the franchise’s familiar focus on a relatable protagonist and the spectacle of the Games—while, he says, Suzanne Collins changes what audiences expect from those moments. That is Lawrence’s description of the film, not a verdict on the finished movie.

What Lawrence means by “return to form”

In an interview reported by GamesRadar+, Lawrence says the new film brought him back to the feeling he had when he joined the franchise to direct Catching Fire. He points to two familiar elements: a protagonist audiences can empathize with and recognizable set pieces associated with the Hunger Games.

Those moments include the reaping, the chariots, the interviews, and the arena games. Their return gives the story a structure that recalls earlier installments, but Lawrence argues that familiar staging does not mean the events unfold as viewers might expect.

How the story changes the familiar formula

Sunrise on the Reaping is based on Suzanne Collins’s novel and follows Haymitch Abernathy in the 50th Hunger Games, 24 years before the original trilogy, according to GamesRadar+. Lawrence says audiences may recognize the setup of a reaping or chariot sequence, “and things are different.” He credits Collins with overturning expectations, adding: “So you have that return to form, but it’s all done in a new way.”

The report does not specify scene by scene how the film changes those familiar sequences. The distinction Lawrence draws is about the balance: recognizable franchise touchstones on one hand, and unexpected developments within them on the other.

How it differs from The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes

GamesRadar+ contrasts the games-centered premise of Sunrise on the Reaping with The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes, which it describes as an origin story about an antagonist with a different chapter structure. That comparison helps explain the “return to form” label as a comment on story shape and franchise elements; it is not a ranking of the two films.
