SpaceX’s October 8, 2026, agreement to acquire up to 14 MHz of paired 800 MHz spectrum sharpened the prospect of Starlink becoming a US mobile carrier—and prompted reports of after-hours declines in AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile shares. But the deal still needs final FCC approval, and a short-term stock reaction is evidence of investor concern, not proof of lasting damage to those carriers.
What did SpaceX announce?
SpaceX said it had agreed to acquire a nationwide portfolio of 800 MHz spectrum, totaling up to 14 MHz paired. The company called the spectrum “one of the key remaining technical gaps” in its effort to make Starlink Mobile a major US carrier. The announced amount is not spectrum SpaceX has already received final authority to use: the transaction remains subject to FCC approval. SpaceX’s October 8 announcement does not establish a launch date or consumer plan terms.
The spectrum news follows an earlier regulatory step: in November 2024, the FCC authorized SpaceX supplemental coverage from space in the US. That authorization, summarized in FCC 24-136, is distinct from approval of this spectrum transaction.
Why did AT&T and Verizon shares fall?
Same-day reports said shares of AT&T, Verizon, and T-Mobile fell in after-hours trading after SpaceX’s announcement. Yahoo Finance and Investing.com covered the reaction, but reported snapshots can differ. The figures should be understood as after-hours moves, not a settled full-session decline.

- Starlink provides reliable high-speed, low-latency, internet wherever you live
- Service plan required, activate STARLINK by selecting a service plan that is customized to meet your personal needs
- Select from plans suited for households or travel
- Get online in minutes, set up STARLINK with just 2-steps, plug it in and point at the sky
- STARLINK comes with everything needed to get online including a kickstand, gen 3-router, cables and power supply
The market’s likely concern is strategic: dedicated low-band spectrum could give SpaceX another building block for a Starlink-branded mobile service, rather than limiting it to connectivity sold through existing carriers. Investors may price in the possibility of future competition before a new service is operating. A one-night share move does not show that AT&T or Verizon has lost customers, revenue, or market share, and the sources do not quantify any eventual effect.
Is Starlink Mobile the same as satellite messaging through a carrier?
No. Starlink Direct to Cell is the partner-enabled service described by SpaceX; Starlink Mobile is the prospective standalone retail-carrier ambition. In the Direct to Cell model, a satellite acts as a cell site in space and connects using a participating mobile operator’s spectrum and network. SpaceX’s February 2025 notice described standard LTE phones and commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the US and One NZ in New Zealand, calling messaging a first step toward additional services. That notice is not evidence that a standalone Starlink plan offers the same features or terms. Read the service notice.

| Option | Business model and network | What is established about availability and terms |
|---|---|---|
| Starlink Direct to Cell | Satellite coverage integrated with a partner carrier’s spectrum and network; the cited notice describes standard LTE phones. | SpaceX’s February 25, 2025 notice described commercial satellite messaging with T-Mobile in the US and One NZ in New Zealand. Check the operators for current availability and terms; the notice does not establish a standalone Starlink retail plan. |
| Starlink Mobile | Prospective Starlink-branded carrier model; SpaceX says the announced 800 MHz spectrum would address a technical gap. | No launch timing, price, device list, coverage commitment, or consumer plan terms are stated in the October 8 announcement; the spectrum transaction awaits final FCC approval. |
How are AT&T and the other carriers responding?
The incumbent response includes satellite partnerships, not only terrestrial network expansion. In May 2026, AT&T, T-Mobile, and Verizon announced an agreement in principle to form a joint venture using satellite direct-to-device technology and pooled spectrum to address coverage gaps. Their announcement said definitive agreements and customary closing conditions were still pending, so it should not be treated as proof that the joint venture is already a live customer service. The carriers’ announcement framed the effort as an option for underserved areas. Verizon CEO Dan Schulman said it would “increase competition for satellite providers.”

The agreement describes a space-based network intended to connect directly to everyday cell phones; the announcement alone does not show that all planned consumer service is broadly available. AT&T’s AST SpaceMobile announcement provides the terms it disclosed.

What could slow Starlink Mobile’s challenge?
Owning spectrum would address one part of building a carrier, not settle the broader questions of service quality, cost, and scale. Coverage for remote areas is a different challenge from handling routine demand across cities, indoors, and wherever customers expect ordinary cellular service. The reporting also identifies capacity, terrestrial infrastructure, economics, permissions for small ground stations, and customer switching as execution issues; the eventual impact depends on how SpaceX addresses them.
AT&T CEO John Stankey told Axios that SpaceX’s plan was “not a viable strategy.” That is his assessment, not a settled finding. The same report described analysts’ doubts about how quickly SpaceX could gain market share. Stankey’s separate argument that “Nothing beats” fiber concerned AT&T’s fiber strategy and a comparison with satellite over the next decade; it should not be read as a neutral assessment of satellite-to-phone coverage.
