SSD prices are facing upward pressure, but the evidence does not show that every consumer NVMe drive has risen by the same amount—or that every model is far above its previous low. TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 forecast calls for NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. That is a forecast for upstream contract prices, not a blanket prediction for retail NVMe prices. AI-related enterprise demand is a major part of the pressure, while weak consumer demand and buyer resistance are limiting how fully higher costs pass through to client drives.
Why are SSD prices going up?
The main pressure is a split in NAND demand. Cloud service providers are expanding AI inference infrastructure, which requires more enterprise storage for real-time retrieval and caching. TrendForce also points to growing use of QLC NAND in vector databases. It forecasts enterprise SSD bit demand to grow more than 80% year over year in 2026, with much of the incremental supply already committed.
TrendForce’s September 30, 2026 outlook projects overall NAND Flash contract prices to rise 15–20% quarter over quarter in 4Q26. The firm expects enterprise SSD price growth to accelerate in that quarter. These are forecasts, not confirmed 4Q26 results. Nor do they mean that every SSD retailer will raise prices by 15–20%: NAND contract prices, enterprise drive prices, and consumer retail listings are different measures.
Does AI make consumer NVMe SSDs more expensive?
AI demand adds pressure to the NAND supply chain, but it does not affect every part of the SSD market in the same way. Enterprise buyers’ demand is strong and much additional supply is committed, while consumer NAND demand is weak and downstream buyers are cautious about accepting higher costs. TrendForce says retail-channel buyers and NAND module makers are finding those costs harder to pass on.

There are signs of that tension in the client market. In a July 3, 2026 outlook, TrendForce said PC manufacturers had built client SSD inventories aggressively in the first half of the year. That stock made them less willing to accept further increases, contributing to more flexible supplier pricing and prolonged negotiations. This can restrain or delay pass-through to consumer drives even while upstream prices rise.
Silicon Motion vice president Nelson Duann told Tom’s Hardware in a June 2026 interview, “The retail SSD market has almost disappeared.” He was describing a shift in controller and NAND supply toward module makers shipping drives to PC manufacturers, which were increasingly sourcing SSDs from those makers amid difficulty obtaining enough NAND directly. It is an industry executive’s characterization of supply routes, not a measured statistic showing that retail sales have ceased.

What the available prices do—and do not—show
TrendForce separates PC-client OEM contract prices from street-price examples. Neither should be mistaken for a current, universally available consumer price.
PC-client OEM contract prices
TrendForce’s price page lists 3Q26 averages for PC-client OEM M.2 TLC PCIe value-grade drives: 321.00 for 1TB, 201.13 for 512GB, and 128.38 for 256GB. The page identifies these as OEM contract prices, not consumer retail prices, and says the data were last updated August 5, 2026. The retrieved page excerpt does not identify the currency.

Dated street-price tracker examples
The same TrendForce page’s street-price table, updated September 24, 2026, lists these examples. The displayed currency is not identified in the page excerpt, so these figures should not be read as U.S.-dollar prices or as verified current listings from a particular retailer.
| Drive | Interface | Capacity | Tracker average |
|---|---|---|---|
| Samsung 990 Pro | PCIe 4.0 x4 | 1TB | 239.99 |
| PNY CS2150 | PCIe 5.0 x4 | 2TB | 380.00 |
| Silicon Power US75 | PCIe 4.0 x4 | 1TB | 189.97 |
| ADATA Ultimate SU650 | SATA | 960GB | 178.97 |
These entries cannot establish how far prices have moved from a previous low: they are a dated snapshot, not a historical comparison or a survey of current retailer prices. TrendForce also says its street-price collection and displayed content changed beginning in January 2026, which complicates comparisons with older tracker data. Tom’s Hardware’s July 29, 2026 examples likewise illustrate individual retail listings; they should not be treated as a representative price index.

Should you buy an NVMe SSD now or wait?
The available forecasts do not settle the next move in consumer retail prices. A forecast of higher NAND contract prices points to upstream pressure, but weak consumer demand, existing client inventories, negotiation, and suppliers’ pricing flexibility can affect whether and when that pressure reaches a particular drive. There is not enough evidence here to recommend buying immediately or waiting for a specific price drop.

If you need storage now, compare the actual listing for the capacity and model you want rather than assuming a market-wide percentage increase. Before choosing an M.2 PCIe 4.0 or PCIe 5.0 NVMe drive, check that your motherboard or laptop has a compatible M.2 slot and supports the drive’s physical size and interface. If the purchase is optional, track the same model at the retailer you would use; a dated market tracker alone cannot show whether that listing is a good deal relative to its own history.
