If sports seem to fill your X timeline, that can happen because For You is personalized: it mixes posts from accounts you follow with recommendations based on your interests and activity in your network. X’s public documentation describes general recommendation signals, but it does not say that sports receive a special ranking boost or that sports dominate everyone’s feed. You can reduce sports recommendations with feedback, interest settings, muted terms, and account curation—or switch to the more predictable Following timeline.
Why you may be seeing so much sports on X
X describes For You as a ranked mix that can include posts from accounts you follow and posts from outside your network. Its documented recommendation signals include accounts and Topics you follow, posts liked by you or people in your network, and accounts followed by people in that network. X also says recommendations learn from interactions such as likes, reposts, and replies. X’s For You recommendations explanation and its general description of recommendations outline these inputs, not a complete ranking formula.
Those signals make a sports-heavy feed plausible if you follow sports accounts or Topics, interact with sports posts, or people in your network engage with sports content. X says Topics reflect conversation volume and health, which can also affect what appears. These are possible explanations—not a diagnosis of your account. X does not publish sports-specific ranking weights, establish that sports are universally dominant, or document a special boost for sports.

| Timeline | What X documents | Best suited to |
|---|---|---|
| For You | Followed accounts and Topics alongside personalized recommendations, including posts from outside your network. | Discovery and a personalized mix. |
| Following | Posts from accounts you follow, shown in reverse chronological order. | A more predictable, chronological stream. |
X describes the two timelines in its timeline guide and For You recommendations page. Following reduces the role of recommendations, but X notes that timeline content can also include promoted posts or reposts; changing timelines is not a guarantee that all sports content or advertising will disappear.

How to get fewer sports posts
1. Choose Following for a chronological view
Open the Home timeline and select Following. X says this view shows posts from accounts you follow in reverse chronological order. The exact control and its location can vary by device, app version, and location.
2. Give feedback on sports recommendations
On an unwanted For You post, open its post menu and choose Not interested in this post. If the recommendation is tied to a Topic, choose Not interested in this Topic when available. X says this feedback helps it recommend less of that type of content; its control guide also describes Show less often as a way to tailor recommendations. A single action is feedback, not a promise of a permanent change. See X’s guide to controlling your experience.

3. Unfollow sports Topics and review interests
Unfollow any sports Topics you no longer want shaping recommendations. You can also review interests in Your X data and opt out of interests there. X says interest changes may take time to affect recommendations, and a Topic may still appear for another reason—for example, a followed account discussing it. See X’s Topics help page.

Mute specific sports-related words, hashtags, or account names that regularly bring unwanted posts into view. X says muted words apply to notifications and the Home timeline. Muting an account removes its posts from your timeline without unfollowing or blocking it; unfollow the account if you no longer want its posts in your feed. Available options can vary across versions and devices. X explains these controls in its experience-control guide.

5. Review the accounts and Topics shaping your network
Check the sports accounts you follow and the Topics you have chosen. X identifies followed accounts, Topics, and activity in your network as recommendation inputs, so adjusting them is a reasonable way to change what informs For You. It will not necessarily remove every sports post or change the feed immediately.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What these controls can—and cannot—do
- Recommendation feedback tells X you want less of a particular kind of content; it does not guarantee that similar posts will never appear.
- Interest changes can take time, and posts about a Topic may still surface through another signal, such as a followed account discussing it.
- Muted words affect notifications and the Home timeline. They are useful for specific terms, but they are different from changing the recommendations system as a whole.
- Following is the more controlled chronological option, but X notes that timelines may also contain promoted posts or reposts.
X’s help pages describe general recommendation signals rather than the exact weighting for an account. They therefore cannot establish why a particular person’s timeline is sports-heavy. Labels and control availability may also change as X updates its apps and services.
