AI IDEs do not generally require task tickets to be YAML files in a repository. Most documented workflows use a natural-language prompt, an issue, or Markdown project instructions; YAML appears when a particular automation needs structured configuration. Use YAML for a ticket when a real script, validator, or workflow needs stable fields—not because an AI editor universally prefers it.
Three different files can be mistaken for an AI task ticket
Before choosing a format, identify what the artifact is supposed to do. A task description tells an agent what to change. Project instructions provide reusable context across tasks. Workflow configuration tells automation how and when to run. One file can sometimes serve more than one purpose, but combining them without a reason can make instructions harder to maintain.
Project instructions: reusable context
Instructions explain conventions that apply repeatedly, such as how to run tests or which patterns the project uses. VS Code’s documentation lists Markdown instruction files for different agent harnesses: Copilot can use .github/copilot-instructions.md or AGENTS.md; Claude uses CLAUDE.md; and Codex uses AGENTS.md. The supported file depends on the selected harness, so check the current VS Code custom instructions documentation rather than assuming an agent will discover any file you add.

A task can be a natural-language prompt or a GitHub issue, depending on the product and workflow. In GitHub Copilot’s IDE agent mode, a prompt can describe the work while repository instructions provide additional context. For the Copilot cloud agent, assigning an issue supplies its title, description, existing comments, and any additional instructions. See GitHub’s documentation for asking Copilot questions in an IDE and using Copilot cloud agent on GitHub.

Anthropic likewise documents a web workflow in which a user selects a GitHub repository, describes the requested work, and lets Claude run remotely and create a pull request. Its examples include queued backlog work and parallel independent issues. These are task-and-issue workflows, not evidence of a universal YAML ticket requirement; consult the Claude Code on the web documentation.
Workflow configuration: instructions for automation
GitHub Agentic Workflows are a more specific case. Their source is Markdown with YAML frontmatter: the frontmatter configures triggers, permissions, tools, safe outputs, and the AI engine, while the Markdown body contains natural-language instructions. Running gh aw compile generates a YAML workflow lock file. That format serves an automation system’s configuration needs; it does not establish YAML as the standard format for individual coding tasks. See Create a GitHub Agentic Workflow.

Why put a task ticket in YAML?
YAML can represent a task as named fields—such as a summary, acceptance criteria, dependencies, or status—that another tool can parse and validate. This can be useful if your team has a concrete consumer for those fields: for example, a script that checks required criteria or automation that routes tasks based on a field.

Without such a consumer, YAML adds a format to learn and maintain without a documented advantage for the agent. The official product documentation cited here does not show that AI IDEs perform better with YAML tickets, nor that they require them. Treat a YAML ticket schema as a team workflow design choice, not a product rule.

Choose the format that fits the job
| Need | Good starting point | When YAML makes sense |
|---|---|---|
| Reusable repository conventions | A Markdown instruction file supported by the selected harness | When a separate automation configuration needs structured settings; keep those settings distinct from ordinary project guidance. |
| One task for an IDE agent | The agent’s documented prompt or issue workflow | When a script or workflow consumes stable task fields, or a validator checks them. |
| Automated runs, permissions, or tool settings | The workflow format documented by the automation product | When that product uses YAML for configuration, as GitHub Agentic Workflows does. |
Judge the choice on four practical questions:
- Will the harness use it? Support and discovery depend on the agent harness. A syntactically correct file that the selected agent does not read will not supply useful context.
- Is its purpose clear? Keep task-specific instructions, durable project guidance, and automation settings distinct unless a real workflow benefits from combining them.
- Can people maintain it? Contributors should be able to review and update the content. If several harnesses are used, a shared supported format can reduce duplicate or conflicting copies; otherwise keep each harness’s files consistent.
- Does a machine need structured fields? If no parser, validator, or workflow consumes the fields, human-readable instructions may be simpler.
How to introduce a repository format without overbuilding it
Start with the agent’s documented task input and its supported project instruction file. Add a task schema only after identifying a recurring problem it would solve, such as missing acceptance criteria or a required field that automation must read.
- Pick a representative task. Choose work that reflects the recurring problem, not an unusually easy or unusually complex outlier.
- Define success before changing the format. Use a concrete criterion, such as whether the task includes verifiable acceptance criteria or whether the workflow can process every required field.
- Record the current outcome. Note how the existing prompt or issue handles that task against the criterion.
- Make the smallest useful change. Add only the fields or instructions needed to address the observed problem. Do not create a repository-wide YAML convention just because it is possible.
- Compare the result. Try the representative task with the proposed format and assess it against the same success criterion. VS Code’s guidance on configuring AI for a codebase recommends starting from an observed problem, setting a representative task and success criterion, recording a baseline, and making the smallest useful change; see Configure AI for your codebase.
Bottom line: use YAML when a workflow needs it
If you need readable task instructions, begin with the agent’s native prompt or issue flow. If you need durable project context, use an instruction file the selected harness supports. Use YAML for task tickets when a real parser, validator, or automation step benefits from predictable fields. The format should solve a demonstrated workflow problem, not become a requirement in search of one.
